I read this from my local news:

This ranks up there with the cocaine Strat pic from a couple of years ago...

Anyone have any hunches on how you would even find this?  Dogs?  Heat sensors?

My best friend's dad works for the BCA (CSI MN). He always stresses that no crime is perfect. there is ALWAYS evidence, ALWAYS a mistake made. I'm guessing they found it via some very simple mistake, like a leaking guitar, or perhaps just some dude knew what a strat body should look like, and these just looked off. Maybe it was the weight. Maybe someone stole one and tried to route i† for HSH. Who knows. I personally hope someone tried to build a guitar with one, 'cause that would be hilarious.

not necessarily. looks to be either a plastic or even aluminum container. if you fill it up then wash it off, it might not be very easily detectable, especially as it is an object not suspected of containing anything.

IIRC from reading an article a long time ago, there was some magic powder leaking from a screw hole.

scent can permeate through just about anything. dogs can smell drugs through even glass sometimes, a.nd al..uminum can be po..rous and if it's steel the welds are pourous. so either someone ratted him and the dogs led the cops to the driveshaft, the dogs let them know there were drus that they found later with the dogs, or the dogs wren't involed, someone ratted him and while moving the vehicle the noticed a vibration from the driveshaft.

I don't know about all cops, everywhere, but.... I had a cop for a landlord in Miami in the early 90's and he candidly told me they tap phones ALL the time. The only time the legality of a tap ever comes into question was if it is to be introduced into court. But if they hear Pete & Joe talking about a big shipment of "bicycle parts" and neither Joe or Pete own or sell bicycles, the cops just happen to show up at the right place at the right time. How many times have you heard the phrase "in plain view?" Like the cop just happened to be walking down a motel corridor, on the 4th floor, and just happened to peek through a window, and the dope dealers just happened to NOT EVEN PULL THE SHADES....

When I heard this, it explained a lot about what happened to some "acquaintances" of mine, prior to that in Austin. They just could not figure out how come the cops knew exactly who to bust, in the right order, to get to Mr. Big. Because you talked about it on the phone, Dumbo. The police will do whatever they can - like, don't buy drugs at a concert, huh? The police were selling LSD at Dead & Phish concerts then busting the buyers for possession, and that's legal.

Aw shoot, that was mean... I had to listen to this to clear out my channels. Kids, don't do drugs at Wembley.

then how does entrapment work? because everytime i hear of a case that sounds like the cops are doing something wrong there is some excuse as to why it wasn't entrapment. is there ever a cse that you can use the entrapment defense?

There are different regulations regarding undercover operations and the legality of the way they catch people in each different jurisdiction, depending upon how the State and Federal Laws and Judgements have unfolded over the years.... While obviously the way the police would operate covertly is different in the USA to say, Australia due to the different legislature and the US Bill of Rights etc., you will find things are slightly different from one State to the next too. That also happens in Australia...

I do know a story of a Cop who went to a big rave party in Sydney and bought some drugs from an undercover cop doing work for another section of the Police - ended up with a minor drugs conviction, losing his job & a lot of friends in the process. In that case, it wasn't entrapment because the undercover cop followed procedures and said the right things to avoid the entrapment defence

Be aware too, that there is a new level of sophistication of phone message interception now occurring due to the use of encrypted digital transmission. Say the wrong word or the wrong sentence and it might be surprising how officials suddenly start getting interested in you. This sort of word spotting amongst phone converstaions is not uncommon but the digital cellphones help it a lot. They can also trace you digitally as you move around a city without even making phone calls. That sort of digital phone tracing helped to convict a Judge trying to get out of traffic enfrigemnets a couple of years ago in Sydney. It was amzing to read they could track his phone with him along the route he took, right past the speed camera he swore on Affidavit that he was nowhere near that day.

Unless you are in a place like Iran or Libya, I think you can get away with saying what you'd like to do to your National Leader on the phone to your buddy in a private conversation and not get hauled in.  :toothy11:

Start really acting on that wish to throttle the buggers, however, and things could snowball badly for you though...we leave a paper trail a mile wide these days. I'm guessing it's the same scenario for Major Crime like Drug Importation.

Mythbusters did an entire show on this.  It was AMAZING what the dogs could find dispite what Tory, Grant and Karie did to try and mask the scent.  The only thing that kept the dog from finding it was to distract it with a female in heat...
