Help changing Hipshot tuner buttons.

Hello!

I recently posted here about Hipshot tuners, I got them and installed them. They fit!
But now I have a problem...
I also ordered the SK1 tuner buttons, but im not sure how to corretly install them.

What I do is that I align the flat side of the tuning post to the hex screw in the button and screw it in, after that I screw in the normal screw in the top.
This makes that every tuner head have a different 'tightness' when turning them. Some are very hard to turn, while others are really easy.
I discovered that if I leave them without the top screw they dont get tight... but when they have the screws they do not get equally tight.
Also, if I dont instert the top screws sometimes the tuner buttopn will slip a bit before turning the actual tuner gears...

What is the correct way of installing them? Cant find anything online and from experience hipshot wont reply me(already emailed, anyway)

Thanks.

Hi Ayanami,
I'm sorry no one from our company has reached out to you yet.

For installing the SK1 knob, I recommend tightening the screw on the side first but only to the point where the knob doesn't spin freely on the shaft. It should still have enough slack to slide in and out. Then tighten the top screw until the tuning stiffness feels good. At that point you can tighten the side screw the rest of the way.

Thank you for using Hipshot tuners!

I've found that a phone call to Hipshot works great.  I recently changed the buttons on my tuners and had no problems. They were keystone shape.  For the keystones  unscrew the tuner button screw, slide off the old tuner button, slide on the new button, insert the screw that came in the package, screw it in to the point where it holds the button securely, that means you don't have to crank it down, just to the point of being secure ... et voila installed!

Edited: I hadn't had my coffee yet

Thanks Josh, now it is much better!
Only one of the tuners is really, really stiff. Even without any of the two screws(it was a pain to insert the button in, too).
But it does not slip or anything, so im cool with that.

Sure... but it looks the same than the other tuners. Its the third string one.
I dont want to remove it to take more photos, it feels like it will break because I need to apply some force.
Im guessing the diameter in the hole of that one is  a little smaller because its hard to insert on any tuner.

Did you try swapping the tuner buttons and the white washer from another tuner?  If the problem remains, it's warranty service.  Just call Hipshot they'll tell you what to do.

By the way, those tuners look really cool.

Tried the button on other tuners, but did not change the washers. Im gonna try that later today.
Thanks

Hope you have your button problem solved by now, but I just want to add a point  here.

I love Hipshot tuners, and have used them on several guitars. I found it easier it replace the buttons without string tension on them. De-tune first, and be careful not to loose the little plastic washers. One time I lost one without knowing, and after installing the new button, it was very stiff. I took it apart again, and noticed the missing washer. Twenty minutes on my hands and knees, and I was finally able to find it. After reinstalling with a little teflon lube, all was well again. I usually tighten the screws so they are just snug, tune up, use for a couple of days, and adjust as needed.

I've always had a good experience with Hipshot. Dave, Josh and Jason usually respond quickly, and are very helpful. My only complaint is that when you post a product review on the company web site, it disappears into some vast abyss. I tried several times before I noticed they haven't posted a review in years! Too bad, they were glowing recommendations!

I see you chose the SK1 buttons for your Hipshot tuners, Ayanami. I'm interested to hear what you think of them.
I find that ordinary shaped buttons tend to feel a bit cramped when they are 6-in-line, especially when the headstock is reversed.
I'm imagining these would feel much easier to tune with. Any thoughts?

I see.
I guess I might just throw out the question for all and anyone to answer instead.
Thanks for the heads up.
