Hello from a Warmoth n00b, and questions re. binding

I've been lurking for a while and browsing all the wonderful guitars on this forum, but now I'm about to hit the button on my first Warmoth body I need some help.

I've got two designs that I'm 99% sure about, but I'm having trouble finding close enough visual representations to determine whether my ideas will work. The Body Builder tool is ok up to a point, but I'd love to see some real world examples of what I have in mind.

Essentially I've mocked up a Black Korina body with white binding, and a Transparent Brown Finish. The reason I want white binding is that I plan to match the body with a Fender Eric Johnson neck, and those have white binding. Not cream apparently, it's pure white.

So here's my mockup. In this picture the trans brown almost looks like a rich dark red, which I really like. I think the white binding will be a nice contrast.

But I've not seen much white binding around. Does anyone have any examples of the transparent brown finish with white binding? I'm also toying with the idea of a burst finish over the Trans Brown - anyone done that?

Thanks in advance, and please forgive any newbie errors!

First of all, welcome to the forum!

I don't recall seeing what you're asking about, but you may want to peruse the customer gallery Warmoth maintains. There are a lot of guitars/basses in there. Chances are good you'll come across something close.

One consolation is that you're matching white, which is at least possible. Creams are a real pain in the shorts.

Yes, that's a benefit. I know the neck binding is white, so it really has to be white binding on the body, or none at all.

My main concern is how well the body finish will go with the white In Real Life.

I think I've scoured every guitar in the galleries now, and not come across anything similar...

Black and white both have the unique quality of looking good with anything. One is no color, and the other is all colors. Can't go wrong.

That's true! And very reassuring. But you know, first Warmoth and all that, importing to the UK - I want to get it right.

The other area for concern is the random nature of the Black Korina grain. I've seen some that have huge yellow stripes down it. Then again, if I've got a transparent finish over the top I would have thought any "extreme" grains will be lessened...

There's always the "unique choice" option that lets you pick the pieces they make the parts out of. Or, wait for something "just right" to show up in the Showcase. Although, at that point I think you're past the ability to get binding.

The trans brown may be too dark if you're wanting to see the black korina grain.  You mentioned a burst, look a black korina with tobacco burst.  It does trans brown around the edges.

There are other colors. This one isn't as dark as it looks in this picture, but that's a transparent finish over black Korina...

Thanks guys, very helpful comments regarding the finish.

In the end I had a think and came up with something else. I already have a Rosewood Fender Neck without binding that needs a home, and the Eric Johnson Neck is expensive for me. Then I saw this example body:

Which I think is lovely. So I emailed Warmoth, and a lovely chap called Josh replied telling me that this was an Ash/Natural Binding/Ash body finished in Transparent Red with a "Black Back Burst Over". He was extremely helpful and walked me through how I would ask for that finish, as it's not a standard one offered in the body builder.

So I ordered it today! I've gone for a hardtail, as my tremolo needs are covered elsewhere (Ibanez ZR trems FTW!), and it will be paired with the Rosewood Fender neck I have to hopefully look like this:

I've gone for something quite simple and subtle for my first project, but hopefully the rich colour and binding will give it a sufficiently luxurious feel. I've got other ideas that I'll now doubt follow through on if all goes well with this.

Very excited!

Another Brit to welcome to the addiction!  :occasion14:

Body choice looks good - shame there so few hardtails in the showcase. Now for the waiting...

Nice choices all round  :icon_thumright:

Did ya get the burst on the back too ?
I have a Red Dye Quilt with Black Burst edges, with Trans Red Back.

(just for some idea)

That's very nice, and yes I did get the burst on the back as well.  I love the knobs on yours. In fact I might steal that idea. I'm only having one volume knob, no tone controls, and I'm having it as far away from the strings as possible. This is because I'm generally an "everything on 10" player, apart from when I do volume swells, and I'd rather not accidentally knock the volume down.

What are those types of knobs called, and where does one get them?

Welcome, Tony - that's a handsome bit of axe you've got planned.  Looking forward to seeing your vision made manifest.

Coming from the creator of the world's most gorgeous double bound Tele I'll take that as a compliment! I'm a big fan of double bound Teles anyway (I've got a 3TSB), but the bound neck on yours is the icing on the cake.

In fact one of the other ideas I had was a sort of reverse negative Strat version of your Tele:

Black binding instead of white of course. But that'll have to wait for another day.

Thanks for the kind words, Tony.  Funny thing, the neck on my tele is not bound - but it has no inlays so that may be what's got you thinking it's different-and-special.  I'm not crazy about bound necks, myself, but I encourage you to realize your vision.  I definitely like the black-binding-on-white ideas you're exploring.  Check out Updown's Stormtrooper for some beauty black-on-white implementation.

Yep  ... reflector knobs, from ... http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/

Should be able to get anywhere.
