Hello from a Warmoth n00b, and questions re. binding

Back to the actual Strat I'm going to build, I've been thinking about the tuners. I'm a big fan of vintage Klusons, and I like the look of the ones with white plastic buttons as well.

It struck me that it might be nice to get an unusual version of those. Are there any examples of coloured plastics being used? I'm thinking a dark tortoiseshell, or even a transparent red!

This is a Japanese site that seem to sell everything gotoh makes though it doesn't look like they hold any stock. So not cheap or fast but there are certainly a lot of options.

Just in case anyone is curious I bought a bullet truss rod nut.

It doesn't fit the Tele Neck I had in mind for it
It doesn't fit either of the Strat necks I have
It doesn't fit my Squier CVC Tele
It doesn't fit my Squier VM 70's Strat (shame!)

Bizarrely though, it does fit an old '89 Korean Squier I have. Perfectly:

Why? Who knows. Those guitars are non Fender spec in so many ways. But there you have it. It fits...the wrong guitar

Interesting. I guess we all learned something, and you got what you wanted on at least one neck.

There is a black plastic surround, it's right there in the picture! All the other necks have them as well.

I don't intend to use it on this guitar, it would look wrong on a 50's style headstock. Just thought you guys might find it interesting, or at least know not to make the same mistake I did. To be honest I kind of knew it wouldn't fit but I wanted it anyway. Maybe I'll find a home for it one day.

For now - into the box of shame it goes!

So it's only been about 3 weeks since I ordered my Warmoth Strat body, but it feels like 3 years!

In the meantime I'm starting to compile my hardware list, as I'd like to have everything ready for when the body arrives..

I've settled on a Callaham vintage hardtail bridge, so I'll get that ordered.

Pickups will be Seymour Duncans, TBC - will be trying some out soon.

The volume knob may possibly be a Silver Reflector.

The pickup switch I guess will be a standard black Strat one.

Jim Dunlop strap locks (the ones that look like normal strap pegs when the strap isn't attached)

Tuners will probably be vintage style Klusons, but I want to get some unusual buttons for them as mentioned earlier. This is something I don't see very often, but as the guitar is a rich, red colour with a burst over, I'd like to get tuners that match, or at least carry the flavour on.

I've seen these Snakewood buttons on acoustic machine heads which look lovely:

But no idea if I can just get the pegs, or if they'll fit on Kluson posts.

I also saw these nice amber ones, but again - same questions:

And these gorgeous Cocobolo ones:

Has anyone installed anything like these on their electric guitar project?

So, what you should do - Guitar Center.... I know it's blasphemous, but they have a selection of Kluson heads you can order if you talk to "the tech". White button klusons should pull off pretty easily, you can replace them without too much difficulty.

Thanks for the suggestion, but actually since my last post I've mocked it up and it doesn't look as nice as I thought. For some reason I thought that mirroring the finish of the body would work, but really the tuners need to mirror the finish of the bridge hardware.

I think the standard nickel Klusons will work best. You've got to try these ideas though!

3 weeks for showcase parts isn't bad at all..... :icon_thumright:

I went full custom, ordered 5/10 received it on 7/2.....

That was a painful 8 weeks :o

Now I am just waiting for my submission to show up in the W gallery.... :laughing7:

I will also vouch for the Classic Vibe Squiers.  They're absurdly nice for the price.  I pick one up to test drive every time I see one in a shop.  I wouldn't buy one simply because I like Gibson scale length better, but if that wasn't an issue, I'd be tempted to get one and stick some Roadhouse pups in it.

Actually it's not a Showcase body, so it's even better than that. Ordered 11/06/13, shipped...today! So just 6 weeks from order to shipping, for a custom body.

Noice!

It really is. It's been shipped so quickly that I've had a bit of a panic in the last couple of days buying all the other bits I needed for it!

I have to say, the service from Warmoth so far has been outstanding.
