Guitar Tech/Luthier recommendations?

Hey everyone!

New here, I have a few custom warmoth builds and I do not feel confident in taking these to a typical Guitar Center/Sam Ash guitar tech as I have had bad experiences with almost all of them. Does anyone know of any reputable guitar techs/luthiers around the New Jersey/New York area? Someone who actually knows what he/she is doing?? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Either one of mine would require crossing the Hudson if you are in Jersey:

I usually do most of my own stuff, but have gotten fret leveling/dressing and amp repair at Division Street Guitars in Peekskill, NY

They did fine work and are all decent people. Nice small shop of all used gear.

I have also gotten work done by the Guitar Specialist, Doug Proper. Bedford Hills, NY. He extremely good, but the type of guy I would use for work on a a '50s Martin or Gibson. He can be pricey and has a substantial backlog. I had a '50s Martin in his shop for 14 months (neck reset).

Also: What do you need done?

Count me interested, as well.

I'm looking for a good tech/luthier to put together and set-up a Warmoth-based build.

(I am interested in doing much of this kind of stuff myself, at some point--looks really fun. But, right now, I'm more immediately looking for a guitar that meets some specs that, as far as I know, aren't met by what's found off-the-rack.)

I don’t if he still works in Brooklyn but there was Gary fried of fried guitars.  I heard he want out of business but he may still be in the nyc area.  I also used carmine street guitars.  For basses Gage’s would be pricy but top notch. They might do guitars now.  I saw them work on bootsie Collins bass.  I touched the neck with the tip of my finger, but don’t tell Bootsie.  I remember there being places in Hoboken that were supposed to be good and some up in Bergen county.  Whether they are still there I don’t know ... that was over 15 years ago.

In the Central Jersey area, not too far from NYC, try New Jersey Guitar & Bass Center on Amboy Ave in Edison. Jay is a Jedi Master of guitar setup and just an all around great guy who greets everyone with a warm smile. What I like most about going there is that you get to talk directly to the guy working on your guitar. Every other place I've been in Jersey will have a guy who comes in a few nights a week to do the work. So the store clerk puts your guitar somewhere, writes you a claim check, and says see you later. Jay will give it a once over while you're in the shop. Turnaround time might be two weeks or more, but you'll get quality work.

In NYC, you want to go to 30th Street Guitars (actually located on W 27th St). You will get great work done there.

I can't find a sub-form!?!?!?
Can you please give us a URL?
Thanks!

It is no longer a sub-forum. See this thread...

...provided you can wait. :(

Two guys in NYC with much shorter turnaround times who've done wonderful work correcting the screwups that I've made with my Warmoth builds are Evan Gluck at New York Guitar Repair, and Paul Nieto at GuitarTechNYC. Both of them are extremely skilled, thoughtful, and comprehensive professionals...and really nice guys to boot.
