Gecko 5 Medium neck comparison

Hi all, I am in need of some assistance.

I am looking purchase a Gecko 5 Medium, however, after an unsatisfactory online purchase of a 5 string bass before, I feel I need to understand more about the bass.  How does the medium Gecko neck compare to other 5 string necks, in thickness and playability, say for example a 5 string Fender Jazzbass?  If this is not a suitable comparison, could you point me in a direction of a neck that is.

Thanks for your time,

sj.

Hi,

The Gecko 5 medium is slightly wider than a Fender Jazz neck.  String spacing for a Jazz is closer to 18mm at the bridge, while the Gecko 5 medium is intended to be used with 19mm spacing at the bridge.

I would say that the Gecko necks are more playable due to the contour, despite their width.  The Gecko necks feel thinner.

I was thinking to myself after doing some research into the geckos, "who would i most like to have feedback from?" And as it happens, it was you.  Thanks for the advice.  Hopefully i will soon begin a gecko collection to rival yours someday.

I've had die hard 4 string players say very nice things after playing my gecko... usually they would avoid the 5's due to the width, but they started to suddenly second guess that choice. The contour really does add a lot of playability... at least it certainly has for me. I've noticed less hand cramping as well after moving into the gecko series.

i had a noodle on a fender jazz 5 yesterday, and if its anything like that i will be most pleased.

How did you acquire your gecko?  Was it on a whim, or did you get a chance to 'try before you buy'?

Had never tried one - just knew that I needed a new 5 for my band, knew I wanted to give Warmoth a shot, and have a weakness for pretty woods ;). I knew it wouldn't be like anything I'd played before, so I didn't set up much of any expectations. I have no regrets about it at all.

Got the body from the showcase and the neck from everyone's favorite gecko connoisseur (Hi Tubby!) and filled it with a bunch of electronics I'd been hearing about.

If I compare our Mexi 5 necks and Deluxe 5 necks against our Gecko neck, I definitely feel the asymetrical contour.  But it is comfortable to me.

Warmoth bass necks have a slab fingerboard and that can give the perception of a thicker neck.  Personally, I like to roll the fingerboard edges quite a bit and that makes all the difference to me.

Just my $0.02.

That is pretty much the same position i am in.  Out of curiosity, what pups did you go for?

I'd had a few recommendations from folks for SGD's work - and I'm quite happy with the results. Eventually wired it up with an Audere Preamp. I'm considering switching to some Seymour Duncan's at some point soon though, not due to any displeasure - but just to try something different. Not sure if it'll happen right away though, lust over another bass build may hit first. It's been building for awhile heh.
