A few spalted tops have tripped my trigger, but yeah most of them just look like rotten wood.

most anyone who looks at it, can tell that Spalt is rot.

when we see rot. many of us don't like it. be it an issue of Aesthetics or concerns of durability.

As you will discover, "furniture" or "coffee table" bodies have a strong following on this board.  Over time, you may find yourself hating them less.

That is right... I am not sure in what age range you are Agwananana, but I can guarantee you that your guitar wood taste will change... I didn't really want any other guitar than a black one when I was 16, and since then I have loved and hated various guitar styles.. I can now appreciate pretty much everything, from coffee table tops, fancy flames and quilts, plain ash, and even a nice solid color (especially when they are done by Tonar) Pretty much anything (except for EMO girl finishes :icon_biggrin

personally I would not order a piece of Spalt maple without seeing it first, since they can range anywhere from spectacular to something that looks like vomit... too risky for me.

Then I started looking at pickups & bridges. Black 6 screw + reverse angled SD 5/2 ought  to make for a really sweet set.
