I just got the following email:

Hello,

Cool!!!

Good for you!  I'm not sure, but I think you may have missed out on some substantial firmware improvements by running the Ultra. This will get you right up to the bleeding edge.

Yep I figure so.  In other news, it just shipped!!  That was fast!  I wonder if they had the thing all boxed up and ready to go in the shipping dept with my name on it or something...  (details removed to keep you grubby internet people from knowing my business :) )

Update - now I seriously need to sell some gear.  Anyone want a VOX Tonelab?

Awesome, Congrats! I was looking into this unit when i bought my helix, looks very nice! I expect an update when you recurve it, on your impressions!  :occasion14:

just curious...I have always been a tube amp type of guy but the AXE FXII really intrigues me.  The advantages when recording is obvious.  However what would you use when playing live.

I would not want to run straight in the the PA.  Would you use a the AXE FXII in front of a good power amp and speaker?  I assume a good quality PA speaker is best feather than a loaded cam of celestials V30s for example.

Thanks

The trouble with using a guitar cab/power amp is it's taking you back into the land where what you're feeding the board doesn't sound like what you're listening to.  These things sound darn fine.

I go straight into the PA.  As long as the overall PA is EQd flat it sounds fine.

And yes, you need a good quality PA type speaker.  That old Peavey with the 15" woofer is not going to cut it.  Actually I'd argue that the old Peavey would not cut it with any source, but I digress.

I don't know about the Axe-FX/AX8 but with my Kemper I can run outputs with speaker sim to the PA and another output withOUT speaker sim to an amp & cab (or just cab if you have a powered Kemper) simultaneously to get that loud cabinet sound behind you.  If you've been stage playing for decades with a loud guitar amp behind you, it can be quite disconcerting suddenly not having that there anymore.  But, not having to lug around a 4x12 is a big motivator to get yourself over it.

Yes you can send with an Axe FX one set of outputs to the board, with full modelling and speakers IRs, and via another set of outputs through a power amp and guitar cab without the speaker modelling.

Some prefer to go that route, but as pointed out earlier then what you hear on stage will differ to what the audience hears. But if it works for you then it's an option.

If you want however to go to front of house and have your own FRFR system on stage probably the most preferred choices are Atomic CLR monitors, or the Matrix amplification options.

@Mayfly, congratulations on the AX8.  :icon_thumright:

I am currently on a waiting list for an FX8 for the second time.  Long story, but if only there were proper time estimates.

Yes, in fact take a look at a powered wedge such as a QSC KW12

Let us know. I finally updated my FW to Quantum earlier this week. Haven't had much time to audition it.

I've only had about 2 minutes to play with it - now the kids are home and time to make dinner.

First impressions:

1 - I like the sound of the wrecker liverpool
2 - this scene thing I need to get into.

More later

Looks like it was a good day for both of us. My Helix just came in. Strange coincidence, haha. :occasion14:

You're going to like scenes. You can set up a preset with your choice of amp/speaker/fx, then within that preset you can have up to 8 scenes where in each scene different things or groups of things can be turned on/off or have variable values changed. So, with a single switch hit, you could change delay, add flange, remove wah and add distortion, etc. all with no latency like a preset change would incur.

And you're posting on a message board? Go get it!

Update - just found the 'saturation' switch.  I... I.... I kinda... like....it......

So how much do you want for for the Tonelab?  Asking for a friend.  (Well, a fifteen-year-old who happens to possess half my DNA).  I got stuff I could trade.  Talk to me.
