Two years down the line.
The debate over me cutting the end off of one of the short screws. It's rock solid.
I'll be building it's twin in a few weeks.
Before I cut the end off the screw, I will use it to 'thread' the hole in the neck. As long as you're sensible - DON'T use an electric screwdriver and stop when you meet resistence - there's no problem.
The point makes it easier to locate/cut the hole's thread. Once it's done, again, as long as you're not a baboon, it won't be a problem not having a pointed end.
