Finished showcase bodies

If a finished showcase body goes back into production for a routing choice, how well does the finish (for the sake of this discussion, Olympic White) stay intact? (e.g. nick's scratches, etc.)

If I request routing on a finished showcase body, I understand that Warmoth will leave the rout(s) unfinished.  Without starting a diatribe on the pros and cons of sheilding, should I finish the rout (paint, shielding paint, Paul Gilbert's blood, etc) or leave it bare?

Thanks.

I've personally seen a good number of bodies that have gone back under the knife, and they're never any the worse for wear. Still showpiece quality. I dare say 95% of their bodies get treated that way, so they've got the handling down pat.

As for the routing treatment, that's up to you. If he holes are visible, then what do you want to see? Personally, I never do anything to them because I never leave them visible, but if they were I'd probably paint the exposed wood black. Shielding cavities is an exercise in futility, so no need to agonize about that.

I realize my single case is insufficient to prove the general proposition, but my black telecaster had the neck pickup cavity routed out to accommodate a humbucker, and arrived in flawless condition.

So far all my Warmoth bodies have been from the showcase, and all flawless when they had pickup routes added after the finish. I definitely wouldn't give it a second thought!

AND does it COST any more to do a re-rout. i see the higher price on the specs menu and the lower price above ?

Not unless you want something unusual, but they've usually got all the possibilities covered.

Had plenty done, never any problem ...  :icon_thumright:

Will this ease your mind ?  :icon_biggrin:

All these had Mounting rings used, so I didn't paint in side.
But if you we're wood mounting, just paint / stain to desired colour.

I've never heard of a case where shielding hurt, although some people think it's a waste of time.

I've had three strats now that I bought from Warmoth, each of which I asked for humbucker routes when the bodies started off SSS.  They all came back without any scratches at all.

I kind of wish all the routes, scratch builds and showcase re-routes, were done post finish.  Never thought to request it.  It would leave the route clean and smooth for any finishing or shielding you wanted to do.  As is, finished routes seem to have some kind of slag in them under the finish.  The only drawback I could see is that any oops would mess up a finished body.

So, new guy here trying to understand the process when buying a Warmoth body!

Say that I'd like a finished body from the showcase (for example: http://www.warmoth.com/Showcase/ShowcaseItem.aspx?i=ps6022&Body=2&Path=Body) and I want it to be routed for two humbuckers, one volume one tone control and like a Wilkinson tremolo, Warmoth will then do this for no extra charge before shipping it to me?

Just want to make sure I understand this correctly you know...  :icon_jokercolor:

And by the way, how comes the body I linked to can't be routed for a fixed bridge?

Yes.

Vibrato bridge routes are done in two stages. First is the rear route for the spring cavity and sustain block clearance, which is done almost automatically on some body styles such as Strats. Then once they know which bridge you want to use they drill/route the top to fit that style. So, while a body in the Showcase may look like it's not routed for a vibrato at first glance, it usually is. Of course, once the rear route is done, you can't really put a hardtail on it.

They recently did an upgrade in the Showcase that's still in Beta, but you can get it to show up by clicking on the little notice at the top right of the page. What it does is let you more easily select inclusive or exclusive features so you only see bodies with certain configurations. By choosing "only hardtails" in the bridge section, you can see what's sitting around waiting for a home.

Just to add to Cageys info.

What you can do is .... say on that body you linked to.
Have a play around.
See the 'select custom options' section.
Select the things you would like from each option.
If you don't want something .... Choose 'None'
The only charges on that body you linked, is the $10 stud install and a Battery box.
Can stick it in your shopping cart and go and see how much the shipping will be. Then just delete from your cart.
(Lost count how many times I've done that)  :toothy11:

Now ... can do the same thing on a Body that isn't finished like this one ....
http://www.warmoth.com/Showcase/ShowcaseItem.aspx?i=s5320&Body=2&Path=Body
This one will have lots more options and costs added on. Finishes (different costs ) and Binding.

If a showcase body doesn't have a contoured heel already .... You can't get that done.

Now .... can do the same thing in the 'Select Options Section' with the Necks.
SS Frets / Nuts / Finishes etc
To see what costs are added on.
This will show that a Raw neck is (mostly) cheaper than a finished one.

Also I would go into the Strat body builder to get idea's and costs of things ..... Plus it's fun fun fun in there  :icon_biggrin:
http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Bodies/BodyBuilder.aspx?style=1

Be aware that a Custom build will cost more than a 'Showcase Body'

Ok thanks for the reply!

I get the thing about the bridge now, I missed the routing on the back for the tremolo springs for some reason...

Of course, the body builder is probably the place where I spend most of my time on the web nowadays! Fun fun fun!  :toothy10:
