Fantasy Builds

I've already got my next 3 G4's planned: :icon_biggrin:
All have specs like my black G4, EMG's, Schaller bridge, all black maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, etc.
1: Flame Maple top in Red Dye, Solid Black back and sides.
2: Flame Maple top in Transparent Brown, a bit inspired by the top of this: http://gretschguitars.com/gear/index.php?a=2&product=G6122-1959 Also Solid Black back and sides.
3: Quilt Maple top in Black Dye. Also Solid Black back and sides.

I was telling my friend about the neck-gone-astray to Thailand, and I was pulling prices from the Showcase for comparison.

Then, I saw

I thought it would look incredible on

Maybe some nickel hardware, amber bell knobs, and you've got a wild-looking guitar!

O damn i figured there would be a thread on this already. I'll rty and delete mine. I don't know if you can on this forum.
EDIT- I removed my post about this. This thread will provide me with sme good study materail 2night. I might even steal an idea or two! lol

You didn't have to delete your post! You may have gotten some new ideas there.  :tard:

No biggie. Better to just bump this one imo. Hey but..How do you think the neck 36th and the bridge Fralin vintage will match up in terms of volume( the one planned in you sig.)?
Im thinking there would be a considerable volume mismatch.

My fantasy build will be to finally get my first one rolling.  I've been drooling over Warmoth for 20 years and have decided to finally just get on with it.  Of course, I have to sell some other guitars first.  Oh how foolish of me to wait until the economy gets bad.....

That said...
Once I get rolling, my fantasy build and what will most likely be my first build, is a mahogony bodied, Swamp Ash carved top, LPS.  Rosewood neck &  fingerboard.  Fatback.  Baby grand bridge.  Reed James woodbuckers (http://www.reedjamescustom.com), cocobolo rings & bobbins.

And I would copy the Chocolate and Caramel guitar in the gallery for the finish.  That color scheme looks delicious.

This is my first post here, so I hope I do this right.

I'm not a guitar player, but I played bass for a while many years ago, and I'd like to put a nice guitar together someday that I could learn on and noodle around with as a hobby.  I've always liked doing basic guitar tech stuff, and I've had a couple of basses apart and back together again with no problems.

For reference as far as what I think sounds good, some of my favorite guitar players are Doug Martsch, David Gilmour, Billy Corgan, Robert Smith and Kevin Shields.  There's obviously a heavy emphasis on atmospherics over shredding or thrashing.  I also like a lot of the older bluesy or rockabilly stuff.

That said, here's an idea for what I think would be a pretty nice custom guitar.

Body - L5S in mahogany, solid body, gloss black with white binding front and back.

Neck - LP stye in mahogany, gloss black to match the body, ebony fretboard, white binding, star inlays in mother of pearl, with a matching star inlay on the headstock.  I don't know if the 25.5" neck would be better or the shorter conversion neck.

Hardware - all chrome or nickel plated.

Bridge - recessed tune-o-matic with the strings through the body.

Tuners - the Hipshot tuners with old fashioned looking (tulip shaped) buttons look pretty nice, or some other more vintage style tuners with mother of pearl buttons.

Pickups and electronics - I like the idea of individual volume and tone controls for each pickup, but I don't know what sort of pickups would sound the best.  Some older style humbuckers with covers, or maybe mini humbuckers.  Gibson style knobs, white on black.

I can sort of see this put together in my head and it looks pretty nice.  I'm not sure what it would sound like.

Another variation would be to do the guitar semi-hollow, with two f-holes, in sparkly orange with cream instead of white bindings and with a pair of cream dogear style P-90 pickups.  Round dots on the fretboard and a standard tune-o-matic with a stop bar tailpiece, or maybe a Bigsby.  More of a rockabilly machine.

Sounds good! Welcome to the board.

Maybe you could do a mix. P90 in the neck, and Humbucker in the bridge. Also, maybe trapezoid inlays would add a bit to the class. The body sounds nice, though.

All right, I'll play, here are some ones I was thinking about.  But let me make it clear that I am officially NOT buying any new guitars until after tax season. :-\  I mean it.

Top-routed swamp ash strat, vintage tint, left f-hole.  One-piece top if possible, I don't really like bookmatched swamp ash.
Tortoise pickguard with zebra SD '59 bridge, lipstick tubes neck and middle.
2 stacked gold knobs in more-comfortable-yet-still-strat-esque positions: a volume and tone each for the humbucker alone and the lipsticks together.
One-piece rosewood neck, yum.
Chrome hardtail bridge, ss frets, chrome tuners.
(I actually already have the pickups for this one.  I might pick up more parts slowly over time and then buy the body and neck.  But not until after April.  I mean it.  But come on, that one would fudging rock, no?)

Cream LPS, black P90s (Lollar? or GFS to save some bread), and I'll use that Tonepros wraparound bridge, black.
4 black speed knobs, you know what they do, and a black LP switch.
Some sort of exotic neck, maybe wenge, with cream-bound ebony board, plain old dots.
(Sort of a found-in-a-pawnshop feel to that.)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH Warmoth is a disease... I don't even play 'em as much as I think about 'em these days :(

An oatmeal caster, I'm going to take a whole lot of oatmeal, pour it into a mould in order to get a body. Chocolate chip inlays. Delish.

Yes... I am eating chocolate chip oatmeal at the moment.

Seriously though, candy apple red body (strat), white perloid pickguard, 2 humbuckers (black) (dimarzio superdistortion bridge, PAF neck), padouk neck with ebony fretboard (boatneck), graphite nut, schaller locking tuners, chrome hardware, vintage style bridge, graphite saddles, 1 volume 1 tone 5 way switch and a few little electronics extras that I put on my other guitars. Nothing too crazy... I like my gear simple.

Both sound great!

The p90s are going to be dogear, right?

And I don't know how lipstick tubes really sound  :tard:

Welcome to the board, Sinistar!
I would put these tuners, to give a traditional look:
http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/tuners_lockinggotoh.htm (the ones in right)

The neck I would get one that can be leave raw, as Rosewood (would give the tone you want from Mahogany)
Pickups: Bare Knuckle, Rio Grande... You've to choose if you want humbucker or P90... If can't decide I would say Mississippi Queen set by Bare Knuckle, P90 under humbucker cover...

Build 1. JAZZ GUITAR
L5S body - walnut body, hollowed, 2 F Holes, binding front and back, selected spruce top. vintage sunburst top, clear back, white binding.

Neck walnut with rosewood fingerboard, white binding, warmoth headstock.

Electronics: 1 Kent Armstrong suspended mini humbucker, suspended from end of fingerboard.

1 ghost piezo system with preamp.

Hardware: Strat hardtail (to fit the Ghost saddles), swicthes and knobs to suit the fast switch Ghost system.

At the rear of the body, along the centre line, rout a small channel from tailpiece to underneath suspended mini humbucker (about the width of the trad. Tele control plate).
Underneath the supended mini humbucker, bore a hole from top down to the channel.Fit a string ferrule in spruce top for that hole so it looks professional and wood doesn;t gfray wires. Run the suspended mini hum's wires through that and along the channel to meet the rear conrtrol rout.
Bore down from top to channel for the 6 holes that the Ghost piezo system needs to run the individual piezo wires to the rear channel and then into the rear control plate.

BUILD 2 ELECTRIC TWELVE STRING.
Jazzmaster body finished in finish of choice (mine would eb sunburst, but YMMV), Alder.
Universal rout for pickups, top routed.
No control routs, upper or lower (do them yourself)
Obtain fender electric 12 pickguard
Have a control plate made to suit pickguard (Mustang, Jaguar & Jazz bass plates won't suit as the chevron points at the top of the plate are reversed for the electric 12)
Seymour Duncan will do retro Electric 12 coils. Custom though and at least $360 for a pair.
Switch can be located from Angela's & also AllParts.
Maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, abalone dots. Kluson keys.

I've been thinking about a 12 string as well. I've never heard about these pickups .... are they the same as the old ones on fender X11s?
