Hi all,
What is the best material to build a level on a deep scratch? I have Franklin Titebond Glue and Stewart-MacDonald Epoxy. Which will work?

got a pic of the scratch and details on what kind of finish is applied?

without more info, I'd say neither. depending on the scratch it could be as simple as buffing it out, sanding/buffing, or even something like carefully filling with CA glue then leveling/buffing

all the best,

R

No on the wood glue.

Concerning how deep and the finish, super glue or epoxy would work.  I used grain filler to fix a defect on the wood before finishing.

Like Casey Anthony sadi....Really it is all circumstancial... :sad1:

Epoxy can also be tough to work with.  If the other materials around it are not as hard as it, it is difficult to level.  Obviously this depends on the epoxy.  CA or super glue, sands quite easily.  The dust bothers me quite a lot, but as a material it is easy to work with.  I just put on a respirator and continue on.

That scratch is on my Epiphone EJ-200.
The scratch goes deep into the finish, it's so deep that the color coat is scratched away. I'm lucky that it's on the edge of the front of the guitar body and the finish there is just black. See the pics.

unless you have that professionally done, you're going to be able to see that one ... and even with a pro, odds are you'll still see it under the right lighting and at the right angle. oddds are you have some kind of poly finish on that, and poly doesn't like to burn into itself when fixing finish marks

my advice for a simple and cheap fix: fingernail polish and then learning to love the mojo

wood glue is definitely NOT the fix answer for that

all the best,

For that...cheap fix would be a sharpie or nail polish and then dab some poly in there since it is an EPI and they use poly not nitro.  If you are careful, you could layer the poly to build it up.  I have actually used wipe on poly and a turkey injector needle to layer in poly.  Make sure the guitar is level or it will run....obviously.

If you really love it, get a quote for a pro.

What did you end up doing.  I am going to do a repair with color and poly on the back of a friends acoustic bass.  I can post some photos if that helps.
