The difference between an S and an SA is very subtle. They both have a lovely wide-range single coil sound. The SA is the pickup David Gilmour uses/used on his EMG-equipped guitars.
I know I don't post here often, but I do read the majority of the postings here and decide to say something every so often.
I've not tried either, however when I was looking around a number of months ago, I had come across the SAVX's which were supposed to sound more stratty. However, I couldn't find very much on them. From what I could find, their coil itself is very similar if no the same, but the magnets are separate alnico magnets. They might be something to look into...
(Also they look a a little more traditional b/c the pole pieces are exposed.)
I recently completed a build with EMG SA's I really like them. As far as sounding like a Strat, I'm not the best judge. I do like the sound a lot and really loved the idea of solderless assembly! I think they have a very warm tone especially in the neck position a little tiny in the bridge.
