Is there a difference when using a dye vs a stain?

I am planning on finishing a flame maple body, applying the darker color, sanding back, and applying the lighter color.  like this...

Does it make a difference if I use a dye or stain??

Thanks

next question...will the dye work on the Mahogany back?  If so, when and how to I fill the grain?

Yes and no...  You can dye any wood type, but when doing a body with two very different types/colors of wood - figured maple/mahogany in your case, it can be tricky depending on the base colors you're trying to use. If you are dying the back a relative dark color like black or dark brown, no big deal. If you are going for a lighter color like a red/blue/??? you may need to bleach the mahogany to get it closer to the maple to start out with and/or mix your dye a bit different shade for the back than the top.

If so, when and how to I fill the grain?

How is covered in any number of threads on this site, first question is what type of filler are you using? Also, are you planning on using colored or clear filler?

If you have a picture or a link to a picture of more exactly what color/type of dye finish you want to do it would be a lot easier to answer the questions above.... A picture of the body in question would be helpful as well, as mahogany has a wide range of coloration and that could effect how you approach the job.

Thanks.  I am up in the air with filler...I prefer to fill BEFORE I dye, whatever works best.  I would actually preferr the back to be darker..which is good since Mahogany will stain darker...I think...  this is the look I would like (my son changed his mind to blue).  I have also posted a link to a thread with the body I will be using...
