Hey, all  - my boy is turning eleven in a month, and he's expressed a a desire to start playing the drums.  He's been dinking around with a toy kit, and his time is surprisingly solid for a kid his age (or for a guitarist).  I want to get a decent kit for him for his birthday, but know nothing about how to shop for drums.  Any tips?

Thanks.

I would say figure out how much you are willing to spend and go from there. The PDP stuff is awesome. Decide right away if you are going to buy a serious instrument or a "toy". Cymbal packs are all over. Get something with high hats a crash and a ride. This will cover your bases so to speak. An electronic kit may be an option too. Simmons makes some affordable stuff and it has a volume control. :guitaristgif:

Pearl, Tama, and Pacific each offer pretty solid starter kits. The shell packs are pretty good these days. One thing you don't want to go too cheap on is cymbals. Trust me. Even if he's just starting out, spend a little extra for some decent cymbals because cheap cymbals will literally sound like he's banging on trash can lids.

What's the budget? A friend of mine just went through the same deal with his kid, bought this:

..and some pack of cymbals they had on sale at GC; actually sounds pretty damn good for the price.
