Is it ok to drill pilot holes for string retainers and strap buttons with just a standard hand held battery powered drill?

Yup.

If you've got some sort of hard finish (I did this on the body), I put masking tape where the holes were going. Then, I could mark exactly where the hole needs to be, and I also felt as though it protected the finish a bit.

I always put the retainer on last - making sure its in the right place once the strings are on, but maybe thats too obvious
