Hi.first project.read much about problems attaching tuners.am putting Gotoh sg38 tuners on tele wenge neck.should I be using drill guides to ensure I drill straight.saw guides for other brand tuners but not gotoh.thanks

Not needed.

Drill guides are needed for tuners that require blind holes to be drilled for posts.

Those have the threaded insert.  Before drilling, install them and hand tighten the threaded insert, assuring (if 6 in line) that the treble, non tuning key side is all in line with a straight edge.  Once that is done, make a pencil mark on the headstock through the screw hole.  Once marked, disassemble and check the marks with a straightedge.  If they are all lined up, proceed with preferred method of drilling.  Punch, hand drill, drill press, etc.

those can be drilled by eye... use a stop mark on the drill bit so you dont over drill the hole too deep.  Then... keep it straight.

You think Fender drills theirs any other way than by eye?  Ha... not on your life

turn all your tuning key knobs flat in a line so that it's easier to eyeball the spacings, then drill away

DRILL BABY, DRILL!!!!!

i put SG38's on my tele deluxe. just hand tightened them, used a pencil and marked the spot for the screw, and then drilled a small hole. make sure to measure the length of the screw and mark that with tape on your drill bit. oh, and use a ruler or something to make sure the tuners are lined up perfectly straight :icon_thumright: i probably moved them around and played with them for 5 or 10 minutes before i was REALLY happy with where they were so i could drill. better safe than sorry.

I havn't done a lot of them but schaller and gotoh's that I have are flat on the top edge.
So I put the bottom one (low E) in and hand tighten the bushing, then I put a small square on the top of the tuner squared to the flat top edge of the HS. I center punch with an awl and drill the hole with my trusty dremel. Be sure to use a mark on the bit so you don't drill through the HS Put the screw in, tighten the nut with a wrench and move up to the next tuner. On the last tuner you run out of edge to set the square to but by then you should be able to use a staight edge if you don't trust your eye.

I installed som sperzel tuners once. They had posts that needed these blind holes. I did it without a drilling guide, and it turned out great. I just used a caliper (or whatever it's called).
Anyways, you won't need that for the gotoh tuners  :icon_thumright:
