Remind me, was that a Unique Choice top? I have 3 of the highest quality flame/quilt tops from the Showcase, however they are all one dimensional with very little/no chatoyance. Your top is simply amazing.
I wonder if dye color has something to do with it. Maybe lighter colors are better?
This was a VUC a.k.a 'Very Unique Choice'.
I had been looking for that specific tubular quilt with reverse chevron orientation for half a year without any luck.
I decided to email Warmoth with a sample shot of what I was looking for:
and asked if they had anything like that in the shop, explaining I had been constantly looking in the unique choice section for half a year...
To my surprise the sales manager checked with the foreman and they actually found some raw piece of quilt maple lumber that matched ! My only regret is not ordering another body from that same piece.
As for chattoyance, it's first and foremost very wood specific.
Darker dyes will kill it of course, as can be seen in the darker red portion of this body, whereas lighter ones don't.
Finishes where sandback is involved and that 1st layer of dye is black/dark will of course kill it too.
The type of dyes also has an effect; the dyes PRS uses preserve chatoyance better but fade way too rapidly if exposed to light. I can't complain about TransTint/Keda so far as far as fading is concerned.
