What a mad couple of days!

I've been lurking around here since the New Year and was getting close to ordering parts for a Les Paul build.

I figured for my first Warmoth I'd just do a showcase body and get a custom neck made. Anyway I'm looking at the showcase the other night, showing my wife the current LP body options available. "They're ugly!" is all she can offer.

So I come back half an hour later and she's looking at Strat bodies. "I like these better ... they're much prettier". So I indulge her, because let's face it I want her to take an interest in me building custom guitars! "So which one do you like sweetheart?". She starts showing me some of the ones she's picked out. I explain to her that none of them have the contoured heel and why I'd want that. So we filter the list and she starts scrolling through the results.

"You should get THAT one!" ... Solid Alder with Candy Tangerine finish (and contoured heel of course).

"Maybe next time" I offered (hoping that there'll be a next time) and then proceeded to tell her all about the Les Paul. She's not impressed, keeps harping on about how ugly the basic LP showcase bodies are. I explain that a maple top with a nice burst or dye finish would be really nice, but it's expensive. Then she turns around and says ... "Why don't you get the orange one now and you can order the other one on your birthday? And if we get back what I think we're going to on our tax this year you can have the fancy maple one you want."

WHAT THA' ??

My birthday's in October!! ... so if I buy a candy strat now, by the end of the year I can have TWO Warmoth axes??

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY WIFE??

Man ... I was literally floored. She found it quite amusing.

So guess what .... I ordered the candy tangerine strat with a wilkinson VS100 ... and a canary on canary 59 roundback with SS frets!!!  :guitaristgif:

I'll be sure to post pics when the goodies eventually arrive. Just had to share the story. Actually what would have made a great picture was the look on my face two nights ago!  :laughing7:

Excellent bargaining skills there Stew.  Well done.

And welcome to the GAS that is Warmoth.  :eek:ccasion14:

welcome man!  :icon_thumright:

What a story! I would have pushed her for 3  :laughing7:

And this is where I must ask you if she realizes how expensive one of these guitars can be to build?  :toothy12:

I tallied up my receipts for everything which included parts, shipping from Warmoth, shipping to/from the builder, custom case, assembly/set-up, and everything else involved.

Drum roll?  $2100+.  :sad1:

I've been tryin' to "prep" my wife for the expectancy to see another build when I get the chance, or at least another custom guitar, just mentioning that I'd love to build another "Star," or build a "Jazz," possibly order that Moser Custom Shop FastStar I've been worshipping for over a year, etc.  She ain't buyin' it.  She's a bit unhappy with me, especially since this one was supposed to be "The One."

Admittedly, I can understand her frustration.  When I started really getting back into playing, I wanted to treat myself to that American custom guitar I'd always wanted, which was a B.C. Rich Custom Shop Warlock.  Imagine my reaction after I priced one out and rung the register at over $6000!  I pretty much accepted right then and there that I would never own one, and then remembered seeing ads for Warmoth in magazines from years ago.  I did some research, and they checked out to be pretty reputable.  I thought about it for months, and said to myself, "Okay, I'll be a bit more involved in this build than just checking a few boxes and waiting 6 months for my guitar."  I decided that I'd probably appreciate and like it even better than the Custom Shop Warlock, especially since I would have the opportunity to see it "come together."  Now, I have my Warmoth completed, and I absolutely love it.  While I would still love to have that Custom Shop Warlock one day, I don't feel like I'm missing out on it.  There are always going to be guitars I want, just like there will always be cars I want.

Haven't tried the Wilkinson trem yet, but you're in for a treat with the SS frets. I love them and will never play another guitar without them. Congrats on the purchase. Now begins the long, arduous wait for it all to arrive. Here's a tip. Double, no Triple check that you have all the screws, pots, knobs, plates, bushings, wire, solder, etc. that you will need so that when it arrives you can just dive right in and get to work on it. There's nothing worse than clearing your whole night out to work on your guitar, only to realize that you don't have the neck plate and you're missing a tone pot.

NOOO!!!! that'd risk loosing all of them! Get the first one built and the second on order, then ask for another. (but make sure you find a pretty body for it . . . seems like that's her weak spot.)

Master. Teach. I learn.

I know .... I know ...

I'm one lucky sucker.

... and that's what it is too ... LUCK. It had nothin' to do with my typically pathetic negotiating skills—well, pathetic when it comes to bargain with the missus! I'm sure there's other married guys out there who know what I mean.

Good point ... and the answer is probably not. I think she's got some idea because she been looking at the showcase bodies and saw the neck I ordered and the trem and stuff. But like you said there's still all the other parts and pickups and shipping and a good case and setup etc. Hopefully it wont blow out so much that she changes her mind!

Of course she has impeccable taste ... she married me didn't she?  :icon_biggrin:
And LPs aren't FUGLY ... just the ones in the showcase .... KIDDING WARMOTH, KIDDING ... well kind of ...

But seriously, I think that my best option is to keep her involved with the process and get her to help me choose the finishes and fittings. She has an artistic flair for that stuff so I can be pretty confident that what she chooses will look good ... even if it's not what I would have picked as a first choice ... Candy tangerine?? Funny thing is I'm really starting to like it and I'm sure in the flesh it'll be even better.

Right on B3Guy. Not gonna push it. Just plan to take it slow, appeal to her sense of aesthetic for beautiful objects and keep my fingers crossed!

I know what ya mean llmtelecaster ... I finished ordering 90% of the parts last night and I was actually a little deflated afterwards. It was exciting planning everything and dreaming about what it'll turn out like but now all I can do is wait. It's only been half a day .....  :sad1:  And point taken about the parts, I'll be sure to triple check that I've got everything. May run it past the forum to make sure I haven't forgotten anything.

Is it here yet ... ?
