Does the type of wood really matter on a solid body?

There's no way on this green Earth a player will ever get a Gibson LP to sound like a Tele or a Strat, and vice versa.
The Epiphone Les Paul Ultra II can get very close to a standard Tele tone, at least the bridge tone. And in all honesty, with some unusual but simple wiring and an EQ pedal, you can make anything sound like anything.

This is what gets me about these sorts of discussions. It's all, ultimately, pointless. Yes, the wood does effect the tone. So does the finish, and the electronics, and hardware. Hell, the very first mdo I ever did to a guitar was changing a Les Paul Junior's pickguard form the stock plastic one to a metal one and that changed the tone dramatically, even though the pickguard doesn't touch any part of the electronics or other hardware.

In the end there are a thousand different ways to get the same result. I'm addicted to playing covers, for reasons that I'm not sure of myself, so every single one of my guitars has been built or modded to achieve one specific tone. But I don't like tribute bands, so rather than copy a band's gear exactly, I find totally opposite ways to get the same sound. I've got Thinline Teles you can play gothic metal on and EMG-equipped super-Strats you can use for the blues. I've got a 7-string that sounds like Prince, a Tele that sounds like a Les Paul Special and a Les Paul that sounds like a Rickenbacker.

Every part of your guitar's construction matters. So does every piece of cable in your chain, every pedal you use and every tiny transistor, pot and wire in your amp. Everything matters. However, different combinations of different parts can lead to the same result. So even though every part of every thing you use effects the tone... it's all just bollocks, in the end. Tone is the easiest thing to change.

Pick what looks cool and feels right to you. Worry about tone later.

I'm amazed that this still gets repeated today as if it had any truth to it.
