Decals - Slide-on vs Stick-on

Could anyone tell me whether the newer Warmoth stick-on decals(stickers) go on over or under the lacquer or poly finish on necks?  It's been my experience in other areas that stick-on decals go on over a finish.  The correct method in using slide-ons is to put them on over 1-2 coats of finish, to be followed by successive layers of finish.  Do the stick-on type go on the same way?  Also if they do, is aerosol misting required over the decal, if lacquer is used?

I use stick-on decals, custom made by a sign/decal maker friend of mine.

I've applied them directly to the wood, and then done 10 coats of wipe on poly over them. Works great.

On my latest headstock, I applied the decal to a flat coat of color paint, then sprayed 4-5 clear coats on top of it. Worked great.  The first two "dusting" coats looked like crap. Scared me. But the latter 3 heavier "wet" coats looked great.

I tried the wipe on poly(Min-Wax) over the stickers, and it went on good.  It still looks like a decal but at least no-one can peel it off!

Thanks.

O.K., so far we've decided that we can put poly over or under a stick-on decal :hello2: what about nitro lacquer?  I wonder if there might be a chemical reaction :icon_scratch:  Any ideas?

That's what chernobyl said!

i think they'll be fine on nitro. i have a bass neck finished in nitro with a decal put on over the finish. i bought it from a guy on ebay who i think was trying to make a replica of an old p-bass that had the fender decal over the finish. either way it's worked fine.

Thanks for the answer.  I had heard that stickers were vinyl and that vinyl can soften and discolor lacquer.  You're probably right and I hope you are.  I still wonder if they can go on under lacquer? :dontknow:

Stick on decals are that way ... in order to go over the finish.

You "can" use them under a finish but beware, they're much thicker than a waterslide, and you cant melt them into a finish so well.

If they're vinyl, keep them away from nitro... it might take a year, but it will eventually fubar the finish
