Same bike before.

i wouldn't buy a stock harley but want to do up a custom bike on a harley platform. i can make anything run good. as far as yamaha, well my current bike is a 1986 yamaha maxim x. it is a 700cc maxim but the engine is a weird spin off of the fz 750 but with lower carburator mounting shorter stroke and shaft drive to the rear wheel. it makes 85 horsepower in stock trim and is rated to run the 1/4 mile in 11.8 seconds or so. not bad for a mere 700cc's on a bike nearly as old as i am. i know the r6 makes like 132hp at the crank but most sports bike riders cant get out of the hole to save there lives. when i used to go to the track the test and tune nights were flooded with kids on sport bikes and i never saw one of them run better than mid 12's. it is just too hard to put that much power down from a standing start on one of them things.

i am not too into the new yamaha cruisers though. too much plastic! and i hate the japaneese gas tank style with the seem on the bottom edge. id much rather get an fz or something.

The key word in there is "kids"......Most of them think cause they got a million horsepower they know how to drag....They haven't a clue about what reaction time is....Besides sport bikes weren't designed for drag racing, I like the corners.....The FZ's were good bike, but yammie needed to step away from air cooled if they wanted better performance...And finally figured it out with the FZR...And I'm sure all harleys arent bad, but there's always that fly in the ointment that brings you down...

But Kawasaki's come in PINK....
mebbe we could get one with flowers on it for Mayfly.... :occasion14:

My two cents.

FIRST I'm a Yamaha Fan. big time. love everything that company does.

SECOND Harley has not been an overly shit company for years. I mean they used to be. but a stock harley is a pretty reliable vehicle. I feel like a lot of the problems people have with harleys is in pipping them and all the bullshit add ons.

The only harleys I have any interest in are Sportster/Nightsters. I don't like big bikes and I am way too happy with myself to need to impress people.

I like light, zippy bikes that aren't torque monsters. that can get from point A to B without much fuss.

the Sportster is as much a chick bike as you make it.

the fz 750 as well as the maxim x (my bike) were liquid cooled. the basic maxim was not.  but i agree the fzr was better.
also i dont think the power output of a sport bike is practical under 80-100 miles per hour.  they didnt get nick named murder cycles for nothing and the power cant be put down by any rider out of the hole, it's not just kids that have that problem. any production sport bike has the theoretical potential to go atleast .5 seconds faster than they are rated to, and riders rarely even come within .5 seconds of there rated quarter mile times. i really dont see anyone being able to twist the throttle all the way back and keep both wheels on the ground not spinning tire untill you are going 60+ in any situation.

as far as harleys they sucked in the 70's and anything older than that you expect some leaks. they actually dripped oil on the primary chain by design probably up untill they released the evo motors that had the trans bolted to the engine(it's still 2 seperate units) and eliminated the vertical support under the seat. this was in the 80's but i dont remember the year. that's when they moved to a sealed primary with flood oiling in place of drip type lubrication. the oils spots were unavoidable and arent really considered a problem. to tell you the truth the old flat side (genorator style) pan heads and shovel heads my father owned were dead reliable and the power was pretty good as well. todays push for big inch cruisers really confuses me because the old 1200's ran very good. many of the new aircooled bikes, japanese or american, are pigs if they are less than 1600cc's and then they turn so slow they are just boring to ride. ive had cars that are under 1600cc's. there is no need for that on a motor cycle. even an air-cooled twin can make great power at much smaller displacments without losing rideability. it is like they build the bike to feel slow and lame just to turn around and sell you a big bore kit.
