The author uses the terms interchangeably, but coil splitting is not the same thing as coil tapping.
A series wired humbucker is essentially the same as a tapped single coil for what is being described there, but there is a difference. Splitting is switching a humbucker into single coil mode, tapping is selectively overwinding or underwinding a coil by winding a tap into the coil.
