Custom Tele Deluxe Build

I'm torn on the pickguards. Either way looks good. I do think the headstock should be black. I'd also lose two of those knobs. They're superfluous, confusing and they clutter things up for no good reason other than to impress the kids. I'd also move the volume knob closer to the controlling hand, but I understand why some people don't want it nearby.

I agree on all of those thoughts Cagey, that is until I learned about the Peter Green Mod for Les Pauls that uses a Reverse Polarity winding on one of the Humbucker pickups, that then allows you to get a Very Straty out of phase sound in the middle position of a 3 way switch that varies considerably as you roll back on one of the volume controls, as it also rolls back on the out of phase effect as one of the Humbuckers volume is turned down, this allows you to blend in or take away the amount of effect to your desire, and you cant do that with only one volume and one tone.....this allows you to be jamming a serious strat toned lead and roll straight into some Les Paul scorching without ever switching from the middle position just by rolling back one of the volume controls, dosnt matter which one you go with, so you can choose Neck Full on or Bridge, it really lends some versatility to a Double Humbucker combo.

heres a quick YouTube demo that explains how to do the mod...go to the end of the vid and it explains the differences..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyibi1TCr1E

heres the sound you get in the middle position:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTORwInej2g....very straty for a Les Paul, which is what Im going for....Les Paul sounds with a cool strat option all in one.

Believe me I wouldnt be able to justify all those knobs either until I learned about this wiring option for Les Pauls.

Whatever works for you is what you should do.

I tried watching the video, but I fell asleep halfway through. When I woke up, the TV had gone into power-saving mode but it sensed my movement and blinked back to life. Agent Gibbs was smacking DiNozo in the back of the head for some reason, and it occurred to me that I should be working on Tipperman's Jag instead of dreaming about fondling Ziva, so... back to work!

Now, where's my beer? Wait... first things first. Where are my cigarettes? Dag nab a ratajack! A Lucifer's work is never done!

Yeah I know the How to video is a boring one...lol

heres some jamming showing the different characteristics of the out of phase sounds ala Peter Green Mod http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anl-xbrvKqE

again I mainly post this stuff for my own future reference so no worries ...I like that I can come back to this sight after weeks, months and years and retrieve info and research on issues that interest me along the way.  :)

Making some progress on my Tele Deluxe build, thought I would post some pics of the really nice Quartersawn Maple/Ebony neck Warmoth sent me along with the hardware and parts I have so far.

The neck was everything I hoped it would be, perfectly straight Quatersawn Maple and a completely Black and unblemished Ebony fretboard, as usual Warmoth has come thru in flying colors, I have always been more than pleased with every neck or body they have made for me and I am picky, but every single time I am very happy...thank you guys for that.

The neck contour is the 59 round back and I think I have finally found the perfect neck for my hands, I always bought fatback necks in the past but they felt a little thick and slow for some lead stuff I like to play, but I liked the tone that the fatback has so I thought I would compromise and try the 59 roundback this time and I am very pleased at how comfortable this neck feels in every position, perfect for me, so I feel I have made a nice discovery and cant wait to play on it.

Already made my January order and Im waiting on the rest of the hardware and finishing supplies.

Im buying a Mahogany Tele Deluxe body with Flame Maple top in February, and Im going to stain the top Dark Vintage Maple with transtint dye, sand it back and then stain it again, with a lighter Honey Amber transtint dye, and then finish the whole thing off with several layers of shellac french polish style, and then a satin nitro clear coat to seal it all.

Im going to finish the neck in a similar fashion, dye and shellac french polish to match or compliment the body, I have plenty of time to work on this project so I wanted to try my hand at an environmentally easy finish, as I have no place to spray and washington is cold and damp, so shellac french polish style is appealing to me.

I rolled the fretboard edges and aged and smoothed the nut and hardware so everything is comfortable and broken in.

I settled on Bareknuckle Abraxas Humbuckers for the heart of the guitar, I really like their reputation and the sound clips and reviews I have come across are stellar, Im looking forward to hearing these in the Mahogany body with the nice crisp Ebony/Maple neck and 25 1/2" scale...Im thinking a Les Paul on steroids.....should be nice for classic rock and psychedelic blues.

There is a way to do the phase shift (Peter Green mod) with only one volume and tone knobs. I use P/P switches for both knobs, one as a coil splitter and one as a phase reverser. It is not exactly the same as working the 2 volume knobs against each other with opposite polarity pickups as you describe, but I find I get a similar effect from adjusting the tone knob on the configuration I use. Plus, with this configuration I can do the same thing with the coils split for even more strat like and tele like sounds. You can see a wiring diagram for this mod here: http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WD2HH3T11_03/Guitar-Wiring-Diagram-2-Humbuckers3-Way-Toggle-Switch1-Volume1Tone003.html

I really like your new design, but I liked the black too, and the ones with no pickguard, and the black headstock, but I also really liked your idea for the maple finish....

ah hell, just build one of each!!!!!  :headbang1:  :occasion14:
:guitarplayer2:

Thanks for the technical info Ddbltrbl, I actually decided to just go with the original 4 knob pickguard model, I never really liked teles until my step daughter clued me into the tele deluxe and then my fasination grew from there, heck my wife even likes the tele deluxe and in her words: ( the tele is so ugly with that ugly bar and weird pickguard) lol.....

I think my design change came about from living with the original idea for so long, but also because the black/black model seemed so metal gothic, which is actually awesome but I started thinking this new design would be geared towards more styles in terms of look, ie blues, classic rock, metal whatever, that or I just got bored and had to plan something else.

I cant wait to buy a body as I changed my mind on the pickguard tele deluxe/regular tele style so often that I just want to buy it and commit for good, but I have to wait till next month to buy that, I already dumped aboatload into finishing supplies and the remaining hardware and electronics and a few tools for the job, its funny I can buy a vintage era tele deluxe cheaper than I can build this beastly creation, so I decided to mack it out but keep the vintage vibe.

I would love to build one of each, hell I would love to build for a living but theres a ton of guys doing that out there so for now its just plane ole Tele Deluxe.

Ya know - all these wood burner types we got here... I didn't read how this one was done, but it makes me wonder about laser etching for designs.

Heck, I would not be shocked to start seeing "figuring" done that way at some point.

Boutique spalt?  :icon_biggrin:

Spalt is fungus. It has occurred to me that the supply of naturally occurring maple in guitar top sized slabs which is structurally sound enough to saw and plane, and not be rejected by the sawmills for safety reasons  (my dad lost fingers when the saw he was using kicked back due to a rotten spot) - just might be rather limited. On the other hand, a culture and some sugar/flour and time...

So it also stands to reason that you could seal portions, slather the fungi starter solution on it, and wait and train the fungi to eat nifty patterns.

the oddly artistic have it: the crappier the wood the more coveted the tops, not to mention the endangered species act, deforestation and capitalism...like Gibson's baked maple fingerboard process, new one piece mahogany necks and of course their Richlite® fingerboard process...puke...... :tard: Real wood: get it while you can.

finished installing the pickups and shielding on a really cool (Cream and Black pickguard)  I got from Terrapin Pickguards, http://www.terrapinguitars.com/matches the Cream and Black Bare Knuckle Abraxas Humbuckers perfectly....first thing I did was use 1200 micro grit sand paper to sand off the Gloss finish and smooth the edges and sharp spots for that nice aged look.

aged the witch hat knobs by sticking them on a flat head screw driver bit and putting it in the chuck of a cordless drill and held the trigger while wrapping the knobs in an 800grit sanding sponge to soften the edges and take off the gloss and they look like they were farmed from an original Tele Deluxe.... I would be carefull of buying so called original 72 knobs at premium prices, as I dont think you could tell the difference between aged at home or originals now that I have done it.

lowered the screws on the pickups and sanded the gloss off the Bare Knuckles as well for the aged look free of charge, again 800 grit sanding sponge.

sanded down the humbucker mounting rings and they also aged perfectly to match the rest of the Black Plastic parts for a really comfortable feel and uniform look, now the standard size humbuckers wont look so off size compared to the original Tele Deluxe over sizeed Wide Range humbuckers.

*** also a nice unexpected result was how the humbucker mounting rings being mounted on the pickguard really stabalized the humbucker adjustment screws and now my humbuckers sit perfectly flat and solid without having to shim the back so no more tilting humbuckers.....nice

Applied about 12-15 coats or sessions of French Polish Shellac to the neck and am continuing to finish that which will be done in about 2 weeks and about 20 more sessions of polish, great prices, quality and shellac info here http://www.shellac.net/

Got myself a nice engraved Neck plate with the Black cat moniker I started using back in 2009 and it will look nice with the rest of the hardware

Had a wonderfull custom strap made for this guitar by Bob at Brookwood leathers a really great guy who does spectacular work who I highly recommend for the best in American made guitar straps http://brookwoodleather.com/

Finished shellacing the neck, going for an aged worn look to match the hardware and pickguard I aged with sand paper, I think it turned out pretty good for my first time at finishing.

Thank you, Im really not a big fan of black hardware, but I didnt think the chrome bridge looked right without putting chrome covered humbuckers on the guitar as well, and I kinda wanted to do something different than the usual Tele Deluxe, thats why I bought the black and cream pickguard from Terrapin pickguards, no one else offers a black and cream pickguard.

The neck dosnt look quite as bright as it appears in the pics but its cool that the neck matches the amber toggle switch tip a cool unexpected result, and being my first time finishing I didnt do as good a job as I would have with more experience, this time out I just wanted to do as much of the build myself as I could, I like the Nitro finishes Tonar does, and I cant think of anyone that does that better, but Im impatient and like to work on my own stuff to, its kind of like working in a garden..very therapeutic.

I need to break down and buy the body, Im thinking a one piece Mahogany with a darker shellac finish similar to the walnut tele deluxe's from the 70's, but Im also building my pedal board at the same time and I can only spend so much each month, soon enough though.

by the way, I like your builds, particularly the choice of mahogany on your strat I always thought mahogany would be a great tone wood for a deeper darker sounding blues machine, and the black and chrome V.I.P. looks about as good as a V.I.P. could, honestly I have never dug the V.I.P. probably because its not a classic as far as typical guitars, but having the black and chrome with matching darker headstock makes it really stand out like a classic, so kudos on a winning combination there.
