Gonna put it on the Ice blue Tele...

Should look nice enough.

There's some nice flame in that maple and the ebony sets it off too. It should look elegant.

How will you be finishing the neck ?

Oh, YEAH!! Finally gettin' to that elegant blue carve-top...that'll be some serious elegance, there!

I'm thinking of doing Tonar's treatment...

Break the edges, burnish the neck, and rub in some BLO. It's a little risky, but he's never had a problem so...

It really brings out the figure in the neck, which isn't quite as obvious otherwise.

I really waffled on whether or not to try that with my latest flamey. The figuring really leaped out when I wiped it with the naptha, -an effect I knew I wouldn't get if I went with a hard finish... but in the end, I couldn't get up the pluck.

-My hat's off to ya, KG, for stickin' your neck out for beauty's sake!  :icon_thumright:

I love Tonar's BLO finished necks!
I have four of them with the oldest being on Cherry Bomb which is almost 4 years old.
She still plays like butta and gets better looking with age.
Highly recommended :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright: :icon_thumright:

I have a lotta faith in Warmoth's wood seasoning integrity, so I'm thinking the wood is pretty well stress-relieved by the time they start machining it. That dramatically reduces the chances of the thing going pretzel on you. Plus, the burnishing tends to close pores and the BLO tends to seal, so the wood probably isn't as prone to environmental change as something completely unfinished would be.

At least, that's what I keep telling myself <grin>

If memory serves, there was a maple neck I sold you that had a beauty mark on the back that you tried this on, and it frustrated you no end - am I misremembering your approach to that neck?

Sweet neck Cagey! I've always been a fan of the warhead... too bad its going on a Tele!  :evil4:

No, your memory is working for you. I just can't believe Tonar does any wrong with finishes, so I must have. After much research, I'm gonna try it again, and if it doesn't work out this time, then I will curse and bitch and govern myself accordingly.

Speaking of that neck and beauty mark, the finish is sorta OK on it now. Great Ape did some interesting burning at the 12th fret to hide the mark for me and dress it up a bit, then I finished it with wipe-on poly (Behlen's Master Gel). It came out good on the neck meat/headstock, but the areas between the frets show some wipe marks I'm not happy about. I can't decide whether to yank it's teeth out and fix that finish, then refret it, or just let it be. The body I was going to put it on has come in handy for setting up other people's necks, so this one may just end up being a spare.

Very sharp piece you've got there! Should look amazing when it's done.

Will it get the full burnishing treatment - right up to 2000 before the oil?

That's the plan, unless Tonar pops up and says otherwise.

I wiped it with Naphtha today just to see the grain, and it's much nicer than the pictures above. Thing is gonna be purty.

I don't know when I'll get to it - I've been fighting some health issues for the last couple months - but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel so it shouldn't be long.

funny thing every time i see a silvery-blue car i'm thinking who in their right mind chooses that colour, but on that tele it's just magical!  going to be amazing.

Should sound good, too. I built a Tele for someone else that used those same pickups (GFS Dream 180s) and it was very satisfying. They're everything they say they are, with a high-quality construction and finish. Don't be fooled by the price - these things are wicked nice! Highly recommended.
