Ok, so... how about this:

You want a tele control plate?  How about one made of pickguard material?

Same goes for jazzbass, jaguar, mustang, jagstang, etc.  Instead of getting chrome control plates...get em out of pickguard material.

Just an idea!~

If I do a Jazz in the future, I'm going to get a custom PG that is all one piece, with no separate control plate.

+1 to the idea, but holy freaking crap are those things absolutely hideous!

A control plate out of pickguard material might be kind of interesting for a Tele though.

FWIW, the modern P-Bass has the controls and jack mounted to the pickguard.  That's always the area on the pickguard that is broken.  Tele controls mounted to pickguard material would probably need more than one screw on each end.

Yep.
Notice the extra screws at the control plate area of the Jazz pickguards...

On the Tele control plate, there is no room to add the extra screws.  As is, it's barely big enough to cover the control cavity.  On a Tele, the plate made of pickguard material would have to be larger, which would look funny, or the cavity would have to be smaller, which is asking a lot.

I'm actually a big fan of the Mark Hoppus bass that you showed there. That is exactly what I was thinking about.

Whether the '83 Strat, the modern P-Bass, or a pickguard materialed control route, I don't like the input jack being mounted in pickguard material.  It takes the most abuse.  When the cable is stepped on by you or other people, the pickguard becomes the strain relief.  Side jack would fix that and it's a non-issue on a Tele.

Why sir, would there have to  be extra screws on a Tele plate?  Two's enuf!

Extra support to ease the stress from heavy use of jack, switch, and knobs.

Aint no jack on a tele plate....
 Crap. I was really tired for some reason when I posted that.

Anyways, I'd imagine some nice thick, maybe .09 plastic instead of .06, and a lot of problems will be greatly reduced.

Think of it... you mount controls on a strat and on a thinline etc etc.... the Tele hot dog is probably the worse case scenario, as it could flex in the middle.  I'm sure the switch and controls will stiffin it a bit though (through the laminate effect).

I like the concept.  Can concieve say... of a Jazz Bass with regular vintage pearl guard and a creme control plate.  Or white pearl with black control plate... any combiination you like really.

My Gibson Ripper has an all-pickguard crap going on. Mind you it's 36 years old. The pickguard is broken across the input jack. My only suggestion: back it with a metal plate or something, or feel the pain.

'cept I didn't let seagulls defecate all over my guitar. That looks nasty.
On the other hand, my metal parts are all rusty.

Can't wait for that last one to come out in a quote.
