Re-finished Kramer American body using Duplicolor filler/primer and Truck, Van & SUV acrylic lacquer paints. Clear coated with Spray Max 2K Urethane. Retro-fitted FR non-recessed rout for a Wilkinson (just need to drill stud holes). The photo below shows the body after the clear coats have been applied. Next, I'll be fine sanding and buffing, then assembling...

Looks pretty good so far.

The name doesn't have anything to do with the space shuttle does it?

That orange peel will come down, no sweat with some 1500 wet sand.    If you haven't sanded poly yet - it seems - that it likes finer papers than lacquer, and more of a need for a sanding block - even a flexible one like that huge pink art eraser Frank Ford is fond of.

Thanks for your comments and feedback. I'm going with chrome pickup rings and tremolo, SD pickups (haven't decided on the models yet), and black hardware. I'm ordering a maple neck from Warmoth. I'll be posing another photo when I'm done sanding and buffing...

Nice work!
I'm sure getting that paint off was lots of fun.

James

Thanks. Here it is after sanding from 320 to 1500 grit paper, that's after the clear coats. The 2nd photo shows it after buffing. The colors I used were Bahama Blue and Universal Black from Duplicolor Truck, Van & SUV cans. I followed John Gleneicki's method of painting your own guitar...http://www.paintyourownguitar.com/idevaffiliate/idevaffiliate.php?id=498_1

nevermind, i've got it. i want a yellow super bee guitar.  :icon_biggrin:

that thing looks great! i almost bought his book and one of his "kramer copies" kits to paint about a year ago or so.

And bye-bye orange peel.  Attaway!~

I think ya could have just started with 600 or (they say at least) 1500 for orange peel, but... it looks nice.

That buff is real buff.  Are you gonna give some swirl remover and then wax it?

Thanks. I bought John Gleneicki's entry-level book a year and a half ago. I didn't feel confident about painting my own guitar until I read it through 2 or 3 times and even then I rushed some parts and needed to start over. You can see my first guitar project (using all urethane paints) under the Phoenix Guitar Project in DIY Finishing. I saved a lot of money this time by using Duplicolor paints instead of Alsa Killer Cans or any other urethane brand.

Thanks. Well, the 320 and 400 grits are for evening out the clear and getting rid of any shiny spots (i.e., taking the orange peel look away). The finer grits; 600, 800, 1000, 1500 are for reducing surface scratches. The final step is the buffing. This brings back the shine to your clear coats. I used 3M Perfect-It II Foam Polishing Pad Glaze - Dark, which removes minor surface scratches and swirl marks. I don't use any wax...

Duplicolor Filler/Primer Gray and Bahama Blue and Universal Black from Duplicolor Truck, Van & SUV cans. Then after 2 days Spray Max 2K Urethane High Gloss Clear. Good Luck...
