Just out of sheer curiosity, would it be possible to stain a maple neck, then finish it? For example, if I want a color similar to ebony but don't want the weight or the price, could I use an ebony stain on a maple neck prior to the finish?
This is a maple neck from a cheap kit, stained (mahogany color) and finished with first a couple of coats of linseed oil, and then a number of coats of Tru-oil. For a darker color, ebony colored stain would work just as well.

Price? Sure Ebony costs more, but does not require a finish. Maple costs lest, but requires a finish. If Warmoth finishes your maple neck, it costs more than an unfinished Ebony neck....usually.
Probably it would be wiser to view it more as a way of combining characteristics of several types of wood. For instance, you may want something that matches your mahogany body but has the tone of maple. Or you might want mahogany color, but with birdseye.
