Can a Stratocaster body be ordered without the Tummy cut and Forearm contour?

Hello,

Due to many back problems I have to play guitars with a modified classical position(angled up). Because of my playing position the standard contours make playing a little uncomfortable.

I was wondering if anyone has ordered a strat body without the contours or if they know if its possible. If they can I could carve out my own so they fit me better.

Thanks.

You might want to ask them.... :icon_thumright:

I have previously said that the squared-off edges of the Telecaster shape makes it easier to play for me - the edge without a forearm contour is where my forearm rests, and the lack of a tummy cut holds it at a better angle. And some of the many people who started Strat have "gone Tele" for similar reasons. I had to "go off the reservation" to find somebody* who would make me a Jaguar body without all the silly contours - Warmoth used to do more of the oddball stuff, but it seems as though for some bodies they just have the CNC set to do one thing - stick a tree in it's gullet and out poops a stack of regulation Stratocasters. I'm not a CNC programmer, but it looks like the pickup routes are an added variable part, while the contours may be in the initial program?

And like many other elements of the guitar cult as founded by Saint Leo, some of these are just downright weird. Can you imagine what sort of playing position you would have to be in - for the forearm bevel on the PRECISION BASS to be "useful" to you? :icon_scratch:

*(Spectacular work, detail-obsessed, good price, and quick, if you do have to leave the fold for a weird one...)

Seems like more and more W is going by what you can do in the Body Builder (at least that's the answer I tend to get) but since it's not in the Body Builder for the Strat body they may do it for an up-charge, but don't be surprised if it's a no. If they don't/won't try USACG, from what I read they will do just about anything you want.

I play in the same position (and when sitting the body is between my legs) and the contours don't bother me. For me it's not my back, it's my wrist, so I have my neck high as well.

Seems like it's an option in the builder.

It only seems like it. I checked it, and the Soloist as well, and while the options show up, the choice is grayed out so you can't change it.

I could almost swear I've seen both of them without the contours, though. it may have something to do with whether they're bound or not. Be worth a call if it's important. It's not like you get tangled up in some computerized call routing system that eats your phone's airtime minutes.

Ummmm ....  :icon_scratch: ......  someone mention a Strat without the contours    :icon_biggrin:

yes, I tried to order a strat with a bloodwood top once and was told it could only be done on an un contoured body.

I am relatively confident that it's possible (given the dense woods demand a chamber or hollow-bodied approach as shown in the post above) - whether it's in the economy level or a custom order I dunno (CNC programming for the solid bodies)...

Also, I'm curious - you're going to carve the body into the appropriate shape, eh?  So  you're going to get a solid mahogany / basswood / alder body and then work it into shape (I wouldn't recommend edge tools on the other 'hardwoods' - too darn tough to carve)...  Also, a random thought - if ur going to carve the body to fit, why wouldn't you get a raw billet and brew your own body blank?  It would track that you have at least a rough knowledge of woodworking and a basswood blank of the size needed, planed and ready is about $40...  Not too much to write off if you butcher it...  Lemme know if you'd like the basswood vendors info  (no kickbacks or anything; he just had exceptional basswood - see example block)
