And CB, you've got to know pretty much everyone. You've got some great stories.
You can measure the capacitance, core to braid with a capacitance meter. Consider the capacitor in your guitar's tone circuit. Some of those cables get up to about 1/4 the value of that. That is, if you're using a .022, you might just see .005 on your meter. GeorgeL's is low. There are other low cables too, but not with the easy to make connections (that I know of at least). Solder is good, but then again, I've never had a problem with the END on the cable of either type. Usually, its that place where the cable bends, right before it gets into the end. The braid goes bad, or the core breaks or something happens... and you need to whack it back and refit. Thats the thing I really like about those ends... you start with a 30 foot cable, and 15 years later, its 28feet six inches, but its still working.
As for knowing folks.... just lucky to have been a goof-off in good places! The school system I went to as a kid was highly progressive with the arts, and we actually had our own in-school guitar class. Tell me THAT wasn't cool. We had folks like Bob Keeshan (Capt Kangaroo), Rodney Dangerfield, Harry Chapin, Marion McPartland, Willy Wayman, Mario Puzo... all stop by for talks at least twice a year it seems. Marion McPartland was artist in residence one year. Willy Wayman - TAUGHT trumpet to the students (hows THAT!). The guitar teacher was good friends with Mike Matthews (ElectroHarmonix, New Sensor Inc), so he came by regularly... once a year at least.
Down here in Fl, I got to meet Carl Radle, Lonnie Mack.... quite literally at the local guitar emporium "Modern Music" in Ft Lauderdale! (not on the same occasion though). Met George Terry there too. One time, it was THE place it seems.
Uncle Spot, aka Ron the Pervert.. (inside joke) is an old customer/friend.. but I've not spoken with him in ages. He builds Harleys too, and is an electron microscope technician turned amp guru. A man after my own heart.
Doug Hoffman and I have talked the finer points of bias face to face in his old shop in Sarasota (in the back room of Vogt's Discount Music on US-41).
Rode an elevator with Tommy Smothers - THAT I'll never forget because he thought that he should have known me... and was trying to be polite. Laugh was all mine that time, cuz I had HIM goin. Great guy from what I can tell, having been in there from the lobby to the top floor over at the Hyatt in Tampa.
Speaking of - I've been to the world famous Mons Venus and (across the street and half a block down) Club 2001. Both world famous (right!) dens of vice in Tampa (hint, the better clubs are all in Clearwater!)
The darker side... some folks I wish I'd never had the pleasure... and to be nice, they'll remain nameless.
All in all... its easy to pass and meet a lot of folks when yer on the run... I mean.. er... having fun! Just be nice to 'em!
