Burnishing non-roasted maple necks?

Hi all!

THere's plenty of posts on burnishing roasted maple necks. Would it work on a regular (non-roasted) maple neck too, and would such a neck need some suort of finish (Tung Oil / poly / nitro / etc.) afterwards, or could it be kept raw without adverse effects?

For what it's worth, I'm based in the Northeast, so we se fairly wide swings in temperature and humidity over a 12-months period.

Uhh, pretty sure no matter what, the big W is plobably going to say you need a finish on reg maple. An if you burnish the frick out of it before, a finish might not even stick very well right? Does any one know if Zima makes a good solvent for finishes?

It works like a champ on regular Maple, but Maple does need a hard finish and a burnished neck doesn't want to hold a finish. Tonar likes to rub boiled linseed oil into his and hasn't had any trouble, but I think I'd call that "anecdotal". Of course, the fact that Maple twists/bends/swells/shrinks on its own if not protected is somewhat anecdotal as well. Warmoth claims about a 10% failure rate on unfinished Maple necks, which is why they won't warrant them. So, you could take a chance, but you might end up scrapping the neck out somewhere down the road.
