Build based on wide neck?

Hey all!

I was wondering, does it make sense to start a build by ordering a neck first?

I really want the widest neck with a bunch of space between the strings, kind of like a nylon classical acoustic. It looks like I could order a Tiltback Superwide, 48mm nut width.

Let's say I did that, would I then be able to fit that neck on just any body? Or is it expected that I also order a custom body for that type of neck?

Thanks!

See this thread

A classical is 2-1/4”, the super wide is 1-7/8”. However it can be ordered with a very flat radius AND most importantly it will fit on any body with a Fender vintage neck pocket dimension (nearly all fenders and all Warmoth’s)

I really like “unified” builds, where the neck and body are clearly intended for each other. You can plan now then order the entire body/neck/hardware combo and Warmoth will ship in one shipment.

Thanks everyone!

I guess I'm just trying to predict the feasibility, cost and difficulty of the build..

For instance, I'm trying to get close to a string spacing of 43mm at the nut and, if I'm comparing to a nylon classical, about 57mm at the bridge. I think I know which neck to order, but will I find an electrical guitar bridge that will make sense with the wide neck?

Here's what I think I'll need, please chime in :)

The "Vintage Spaced Strat Flat-Mount" bridge that Warmoth sells has 57mm spacing, the widest spaced electric bridge that I've seen. For that bridge you'd want the corosponding "vintage strat flat mount" bridge route. https://warmoth.com/sfm1

Most vintage spaced strat hardtail bridges are a hair less wide at 2-7/32"/76.4mm. If you could live with that and would like a "fancier" bridge there's options from Callaham and others https://www.callahamguitars.com/strat_bridge_hardtail_catalog.htm

Awesome! Thank you @ragamuffin !

So, with the neck settled, and now the bridge, I guess the only other really important thing would be the pickups? Is wide string spacing a concern when selecting pickups? Like, are most pickups' posts spaced based on standard electric guitar string spacing?

Thanks again to all!

Most single coils will be fine, while most "standard" humbuckers and p90s have a string spacing of 49.2mm or similar; so they wouldn't line up with the strings that well (which isn't really a big deal, more aesthetic than anything), but many companies now also make wider spaced humbuckers and call them "F-spaced" or "trembuckers" which will be closer to your bridge spacing.

What kind of pickups were you thinking you'd want to use?

I prefer the Dimarzio F spaced as they just move the poles, Duncan makes the whole darn bobbin wider.

The metric measurements below have errors.

That is about 56.6mm so in between 56 and 57mm

2-7/32" is about 56.356 mm

76.4mm is a little over 3 inches.

Thanks Strat!

The Vintage Strat Flat-mount on the Warmoth website lists 57mm/ 2-1/4"

76.4 was definitely a typo, I meant 56.4mm

You guys are all awesome!

What kind of pickups were you thinking you'd want to use?

At first, I was thinking of maybe going for rails (Seymour Duncan Cool Rails Strat®, Bridge) to compensate for the wider string spacing. But now that I learned about "F-spaced" or "trembuckers", I may just go for that.

I'm not an experienced enough player to know exactly what I want in terms of sound, so I'm thinking of starting off with only a humbucking bridge pickup and take it from there.

Perhaps have a look at the SD 59 Custom Hybrid, available as a trembucker. In the green strat in my signature that has a SD Pearly Gates, trembucker which I would also recommend.

Lot of love for wide necks here! Also, check out the the Rail Hammer nuevo 90's. They have a different take on string spacing, no hum, and when clean sound like a 90, and when distorted sound like a 90, but with slight crunch sound humbucker'ish with humbucker sustain. Really nice sounding. They are in the guitar in my signature.
