Anyone else heard these guys before?  I discovered their album on rhapsody over the summer and now I'm a complete addict.  So good!

with the fracturing of the stranglehold the record industry has had on pop music lately, it is good to see so many independent and creative bands finding a way to market music these days.
I find these guys refreshing, much more than the latest clone of whatever we heard yesterday

Totally.  Blind Pilot was completely a grass roots thing from the get go.  Practically everyone who knows about them heard about them by word of mouth or music blogs.  They went from playing in bars to opening for some pretty big acts and doing overseas tours within a year.

Usually I like bands that have a lot more going on in the orchestration, but these guys really don't need anything fancy with song writing as strong as theirs.  It's all so straightforward and likeable, and somehow has this feeling like they're saying something important, but in a very simple way.  It almost reminds me of Cat Stevens or something, just very stripped back and honest.

I picked up their album when I was looking up Portland bands in preparation to move there/here. I think it's a pretty solid album - they clearly draw on a number of other contemporary artists and I think they're still at a point where they could go one of two ways
a) blend in with the crowd and just be one of those bands that sounds like a bunch of other bands
b) refine the elements they borrow from other artists into their own distinct sound.

my only real qualm is that the acoustic band format leaves something to be desired for me. I personally can't enjoy totally an album's worth of acoustic songs with no deviation in the instrumentation or form.
That being said, I'm going to go listen to "Poor Boy" right now. thanks!
