bit of an odd question

sometimes (in a few riffs i write), i play distortion with the wah engaged and fully pulled back. it makes this weirdly cool, growly, throaty kind of sound which i really dig at times, although it does sound a little too "processed". deifinitely not everybody's cup o tea, and not one for the purists either. good fun though. so a question:

does anybody know what frequencies are cut/boosted when a wah is in the fully back position (ie, heel down)?
and  can these frequencies be replicated (or come close to) by something like graphic eq?

i'm just curious more than anything, might be a handy thing to know if i come across a 2nd hand eq. it can add a really cool and different sound to distortion, and i like that added variety

Check these out.  They are fixed wah pedals.  ie, you use the knobs to set the wah 'position' and then switch it on/off like a regualr pedal.  It was basically designed as a wah circuit with knobs instead of a rocker/treadle to create those half cocked Michael Schenker sounds without havign to actually wah your wah.
(Does that make any sense?  :icon_scratch: )

Looks like the original may have been discontinued, but the Kerry King signature version might still be Ok for your application.  The top website is froma UK based supplier, butyou might be able to find something if you are in the states.

Try it out

Since all wah's are different, and completely tweakable(some with just adjusting the pot or others with knobs and switches), it's hard to say what frequency exactly is being cut.  But basically when it's all the way back it sort of a high cut filter with a hump in the lower frequencies, I'd say probably in the 500hz-2k range.

Personally, if I were getting a eq to try and replicate it, I'd get a fully parametric EQ, not a graphic.   Graphic EQ's have a set frequency range, where as parametrics allow you to adjust, frequency, volume and Q.  Plus you can sweep the frequencies to try and find the exact sweet spot.

Whoa, sweet. I didn't even know a product like that even existed. I might get one just to dick around with if I can manage to track one down here in the states.
