Best to judge for yourself.  Go to the custom build link on the Warmoth site, choose your desired style, select ash as the wood and use the finish options to see what they will look like. It won't be exact, but it's pretty close.

Only you can decide what your favorite color is. Think for yourself and don't allow the aesthetics of YOUR guitar to be decided by others.

But since you asked, I think alder is generally horrid under dyes, and not very interesting under transparent finishes. Unless you have a minimalist idea in mind, ash is better suited to dyes and transparent finishes.

For alder, it depends on the wood.  Some pieces have interesting grain and will look nice under a clear finish, for the most part though, Alder is bland and calls out for a solid coat.  You could put a clear coat on a bland piece of Alder, but it'll be bland.  If you want a black or green guitar go for it.

For ash, I like a natural grain filler, followed by a clear coat of tru-oil.  With age it looks really nice.  Filling the grain takes time, but the results are worth it.  I think a solid color on swamp ash stops you from admiring the grain pattern.

So far I think surf green, tobacco burst and transparent neon orange are the best colors. Although I haven't recieved my orange one yet so hopefully it is as awesome as I am seeing it in my head  :laughing7:

That's blue? Looks black.
It does look black in that photo, but I can assure you it's blue. Well I am color blind a bit, so it may be black.... :dontknow:

Shrodinger's cat has a Jackson that is both blue and black.  :guitarplayer2:

Which begs the question: Why didn't Shrodinger have a dog?

The answer is obvious:
