I like the 5-string for the lower notes that can be achieved. I don't care for 6-string basses because the neck is too wide, and I really don't see the point of playing notes that high on a bass. 'Might as well just play guitar if you're gonna do that.

MAN, I FREAKING HATE THAT SORT OF ATTITUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same.
Why the ridiculous closed mindedness? A bass can do a lot more than just thump out root notes. :tard:

It's not "ridiculous" at all. It's called BASS for a reason. If you're gonna play treble notes, it is no longer a bass, it is a different instrument.
And why does anyone want a neck that's as wide as an aircraft carrier?

I think 8-string and 12-string basses are much more useful than a 6-string anyway, because there are 2 or 3 octaves per note, which produces a nice jangly "grind".

Yeah, when you call it a 6 string piccolo bass and put a floyd on it - I think that's just guitar envy.

By this logic there are a lot of "guitarists" misusing their instrument to use their lower octaves improperly. Pretty much every metal band that ever chugged away at low end power chords with a scooped mid eq or dropped tuned is clearly misusing their instrument.

Bass is a role and an instrument and a frequency range. Why limit yourself?

They're still playing guitar, not guitar on bass...

street avenger...running the risk of getting reprimanded for insults, and yada yada yada...your a f***ing retard, or just messing with us all. "bass" is more than a register. like unrepresented said, it's a role. I hate that bass guitar is named "bass"...all guitars should be named "trebles". do you realize that guitars contains notes in the bass register, right? if you're so closed minded that bassists should never venture above the 5th fret, and such, then I suppose guitar can never go below the 12th fret, right? oh wait, that's just "playing guitar". go f*** yourself with that stupid, egocentric attitude. if it weren't for bass players, the majority of music wouldn't have any punch. it's a role that marries the rhythm section to the melody and, depending on the situation, support the song with a rock solid foundation for the message of the song to be delivered to the listener, or completely drive the song and be a completely inseparable part of the song.

JimBeed, his name is Billy Sheehan, and he's probably the greatest person to touch the bass guitar.

Interesting.
Would you mind explaining the physics to me of how the instrument you're playing changes when you play in different note ranges? I'm afraid I'm a bit slow to understand. :dontknow:
I wasn't aware that basses became guitars when you played high notes.

The OP asked for opinions. I gave mine, and I'm entitled to my opinion. If insulting me makes you feel good about yourself, go right ahead. Doesn't mean jack to me.

I like bass players who play BASS and are part of a rhythm section in a band (like my band). I've never been interested in the bass being used as some sort of wide-range, eclectic instrument.

That hardly makes me a "retard". It just makes You a keyboard warrior. It also makes you look foolish to use Billy Sheehan, a FOUR STRING bass player, as an example to defend the 6-string bass.

No, I'm not interested in explaining it. If you think high notes are "bass", then you need to go back to school. Those notes are not even in the bass clef of the music staff.

street avenger, great reading skills there. I posted the Billy Sheehan stuff for JimBeed...that's why I addressed him after I had to rant because your ignorant self. also, good visual skills...if you simply look in my signature, you'll see I play a four string bass, too. I've never liked the feel of a 5 and 6 string bass. not saying they're not for other players, though. just not my thing. so lemme guess, your band consists of the drummer and bass player doing little of nothing repeating the same root-5-7 progression while the guitar and singer wank away in the spotlight? yea, that sound like a good time....

go tell Bach about how the "bass" is only supposed to plonk through a song with notes every time the bass drum sounds.

also, the "bass guitar" isn't just a register. as I said before, it's a completely different instrument with a unique role in the band which I've already explained. if you think all it's good for is just being another dull thud in the background with the bass drum, you really don't know jack crap about music.

Calm down everyone.

Just because SA has an extremely narrow definition of what "bass" should mean, we don't have to let it turn ugly. We can just disagree, ya' know.  :occasion14:

Just don't tell him about Piccolo Basses, as the idea might make his head explode.  :icon_biggrin:

We're not talking about note ranges, we're talking about instruments. You said that if I play high notes, I'm playing a different instrument.
It goes without saying that if you play notes outside of the bass range, you are not playing notes in the bass range.

ah, the ever logical Joey. you're the one that makes sense. when I get into an argument and start to get really flustered, I'm the one that gets pissed and goes

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

while still trying to keep a bit of logic

Knock it off.  You folks don't need to insult people and spam the boards with Wall Of Text (or in this case, Wall Of Youtube) to hide the fact that your "point" is an "opinion," and that you've already made it.  There is no "right" in this discussion, and all of you have points, some that I value more than others.

These boards are civil, and this is not your own little war to be won.  Grow up, back off, whatever you want to call it, but stop acting like jackmonkeys.

Yup very true, however monkeys can be fun at times  :icon_biggrin:

Yeah, I've been a musician for 26 years, but "don't know jack crap about music". You really got me there.  You're nothing but a troll. You don't know me, and you know nothing about me. I stated my opinion that I don't care for 6-string basses, and suddenly I am a "F###ing retard".  Kindly P!$$ off...
