Bad day here for our family

My wife is at her parents house now preparing to take her mom's Irish Wolfhound to the vets to go to the great doggy gig in the sky.  Maggie (the wolfhound) is 11, which is really old for a wolfhound, but we are still pretty sad.  She got maggie when our boy was 5 months old, and they grew up together.

We will miss her, she is a giant dog with a giant heart and such a gentle soul.  She is just so sick, unable to walk and now she is refusing to eat.  I'm pretty upset about it all and my wife is in pieces about it.  I have to tell my boy when he gets home from school what is going on.... Not something I really want to do.

So to Maggie:  Fare you well, fare you well, we love you more than words can tell

Sorry to hear about your situation.  We went through it not too long ago with Dave, our St. Bernard/Retriever mix, who lived to 15.  He was the only dog my daughter knew growing up as we got him when she was 6 months old and he was her protector.  My heart goes out to you and your family.

Really sad story... My dog is 13 years old, in pretty good shape but I know it's just a matter of time... You just try not to think about it :sad1:

Hope everything goes well with your son.

Beautiful photo of probably the most beautiful dog breed in the world. And I've only heard good things about their personality. Sad to hear of your loss!

Thanks all for the kind words, I'm actually sitting here reading the forum putting off telling my boy what's going on.  I hate giving someone bad news, especially a kid........

Well, I gotta go do this  :sad1: << the little smiley kind of sums it up

I grew up around dogs (my Dad was a Harrier Hound breeder and later we had Sydney Silkie Terriers in our house). It will upset your kid knowing the dog is no longer around, but try to explain that the poor pet couldn't go on.

Lots of animals won't show their pain, and when they do, it is a sure indicator that things are really wrong.

A dog of that size, to go off their food, is really wrong. You know you are doing the right thing in the long run, but it doesn't help ease your family's pain at the moment. Condolenses.

I have always loved dogs of that size, the Great Danes, the Russian and Irish Wolfhounds etc. Those I have seen have all been gentle giants with great character. Would happily launch their front paws up on adults' shoulders to shock them, but let kids crawl all over them.

Lots of people simply don't have the resources to own and keep one of these beautiful breeds in their house, and I suppose in times to come you will look back at your time with Maggie & realise it was a special pet for your family to have.

Putting a pet down is such a horrible feeling, even though it's the humane thing to do.  So sorry!

My little buddy is 14 and he is the best dog ever.  I'm going to cry for days when his time comes.

I'm so sorry to read about this.  Its the hardest day in an animal lover's life.  But I know from experience that there is a little part inside of you that is proud to do the right thing for a loved one when its time.  Really, there is no greater love than to know when its over and take the necessary steps.

Take it easy, spend some time with family, and you'll get through it together.

Enjoy every day you have.  Its just another one of life's reminders that its such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.
