B.O. Tele - Buck Owens not Body Odor

Got the Quantum View e-mail, and it's on its way.  I done went off the deep end and totally did something that isn't me.  I'm Buck Owens aware, not really a fan.  Since I'm a detail nitpicker, I could say that Buck Owens' Teles were top routed, didn't have binding, didn't have Maple tops, and didn't have dyed finishes.  Then again, look at it.  Who else's could it be?  Definitely an "inspired by" but not "replica" piece.

I can not stress enough, this so isn't me, but it was marked down to a little over 50% of it's build to order price because it hadn't moved for 14 months.  Sold!  This will be a Warmoth 1st for me in many ways.  Never had, and not a fan of, gloss finishes, fancy Maple tops, rear routes on Fender shapes, and gold hardware.  This will have all of that.  I also had them route the neck for a P-90.

I like the Buck Owens Guitars and that one you're building...DAMN...THAT"S GONNA BE HOT!!!

What's the neck going to be???

I'm going to use this neck and eventually get another neck for the Butterscotch Tele.  It's a '59 Roundback Warmoth Pro, no dots, AAA Birdseye Maple, 1 11/16" nut width.

I've lately started to be more appreciative of good old Buck Owens and Don Rich.  Good on ya for building that tele!

I currently have too many guitars, but if I were to build another it would be one of these:

That'll work! Good looking neck for that body and I like the "Sans Dots" if I'm seeing it correctly.

Too many...guitars? I'm sorry, I don't understand.  :dontknow:

Buck Owens is actually all kinds of cool. A lot of those old country guys are tremendous players. I like both the RW&B and silver sparkle Teles.

I been L@@Kin' at that body and hoping someone from the UWforum would snag it.  What a beaut!

You just have to resist the urge to hang it from a flag pole on independence day :laughing7:

Its not a body I would buy, but its certainly one I can appreciate and cant wait to see it finished :icon_thumright:

In all actuality, there's no white in the finish.  It's red and blue dye with a clear center section.  A clear gloss finish on Maple, we wouldn't call it white, but when you put red and blue on both sides of it, white is implied.  Very sneaky of those Warmoth boys.

True. I thought of that after writing "RW&B" in my last post. But the clear makes it a little more subtle. Wonder what it would look like with a Mary Kaye-style finish (i.e. trans white) on the centre section?

FWIW, I ordered it over the phone and the W sales person referred to it as red, white, and blue...and Buck Owens.  I don't think the Mark Kaye would look as good with it simply because the red and blue are dyes and the MK isn't.  The dyes are in the wood whereas transparent finishes are on the wood.

I agree about the MK. Frankly, I have considered getting something like the body you bought in red/clear/red, but I suspect a non-Showcase item like that would cost a pretty penny.

It hadn't moved and was marked way down.  It was impulse and that's the only reason I bought it.  In the GAS Alert!!!! thread, Gregg said they had more unfinished bodies like that (and I think you commented too), of course it was a while back.  I don't recall them in the showcase, and unless a lurker got them, we haven't seen them in the Unofficial forum.  They may still be there.  I think Walnut laminate strips between the Maple pieces on the top and all one color dye would look cool, a la older B.C. Riches and the Ty Tabor sig model Yamaha.  I saw a few like that in the showcase.  Maybe that was them.

The parts are starting to role in.  The tuners on the existing neck are Gotoh minis with a 13/32 O.D.?  They are also chrome, so they go into the drawer until the next time.  Gotoh makes the minis in gold, but that would be too easy.  This neck has a great TUSQ nut and was filed lower to perfection during setup.  It also doesn't need string tees, even with standard tuners.  However, the new build is getting staggered tuners.  Does anyone know how hard it is to find gold staggered, non-locking tuners with a 13/32" O.D.?  Really hard. Of course asking that the new ones have the same mounting hole as the Gotoh, well, forget about it.  I want staggered so much so that I don't mind having 6 exposed, unused mounting holes on the back of the headstock.  Solution, Fender/Schaller staggered tuners.  They're available in gold, are staggered, and have 13/32" O.D.  But...they have no mounting screws, just pins.  That's where Stew Mac and this guy come in.  BTW, I found all the info about the Stew Mac tool as well the existence and O.D. of the tuners through a google search that lead me.....here!

Ha ha I knew what you meant when you posted the Thread title, but laughed at the idea some folks might think this Tele stinks like an armpit!   :laughing3:

I completely understand your need to satisfy your GAS urges. Heck, it's only guitar acquisition not kiddie killing on impulse, so no one's getting hurt except your bank balance.  :icon_thumright:

Putting EMGs into this body?

Haha didnt even catch that the middle wasn't white. Very sneaky indeed :laughing7:

would there be some crazy bleaching method that could be used? or a white grain filler? I know nothing of finishes or the finnish, but hey, never hurts to ask, right?

Nope.  Everything is ordered and en route except for the p'ups.  I had the neck pickup routed for a P-90 and I'm thinking Kinman humcancelling neck P-90 and equivalent Tele bridge.  I would go Lollar, but don't want the hum.  There's plenty of great pickups out there.  Considered the rio Grande stuff too.
