Many, if not most neck through and set neck guitars have painted or stained necks but I haven't heard or read anyone fret (no pun intended) over their “feel”, “stickiness” or “slickness”. However, with practically all bolt-on necks, where more options are available, (unfinished, bare/raw or finished; satin, gloss, etc.) there are many more opinions, with each insisting that one type of finish is better or preferred over the others.
In other words, in an area where there are fewer options, it seems that players complain less.
