I've been wanting to do a raw, 80s inspired shredder for a while.

George Lynch, Jason Becker, Joe Perry, Kramer/ESP

I picked up this light (3.5 lbs-ish) ash body from the showcase a couple weeks before the roasted ash bodies were announced - I woud probably have gone that route, but I'm happy with this body! Routed H-S with an angled neck pocket and contoured heel.

I also ordered a roasted maple reverse Slapshot neck with a black ebony board, 1 3/4 nut, big stainless frets, and Wizard profile. That arrives next week.

Build is going to be:
  • Top-mounted German OFR
  • Duncan JB Trembucker bridge
  • Duncan SSL-6 neck
  • Single volume CTS pot in the Charvel San Dimas position
  • 3-way Switchcraft SG switch
  • Brass knob/switch tip
  • Electrosocket jack
  • Schaller locking tuners

Here are some pics of the progress - more to come as the build progresses.

My finishing supplies. I live in a small apartment in NYC and don't have an outside space anymore, so I can't do any spray finishes, so it's an all hand applied finish. I'm going to bump up the grain with the Stew Mac dark grain filler, tint slightly with the Minwax oil-based stain, then top off with Tru-Oil.

Preparing to apply the grain filler. I sanded the body down to 220.

OK so I skipped some boring finishing photos here.

Here the body now - I did a soaking coat of Tru-Oil, buffed it out, and applied about 3 or 4 more coats. Buffed it out to a satin sheen with 0000 steel wool.

I also applied SM conductive shielding paint to the PUP cavities and the rear control cavity

More to come!

OK, a little progress

Here I'm mocking up some parts

Wired it up. It's not the prettiest job, but seems to work well!

Installing foam rubber in the pickup cavities.

Here I've scrwed both pickups down, may have to find some better screws for the humbucker. it's a little tilted and I may not be able to raise it high enough. Not sure, but I may end up with a pickup ring later on.
