80's Pop Music.

i was born right at the end of the 80s, too young to remember it at all. but for some strange reason i don't like much music past the mid 90's. I'm a very open minded guy but nothing moves me quite like bands and artists from the time, such as Mr. Mister, Genesis and Kenny loggins. I'm not gonna claim its better or the musicians were better at the time but i get the distinct impression modern young musicians don't get the fun and arent "pushing the boundries" (whatever the hell that means) quite as much as they used to and are much more lazy with the way they approach music. This might have been true in the 80's and beyond aswell cause i wasnt alive at the time. Without turning this into a bitchfest i can't stand how i don't hear anything catchy or anything that seems to have a high degree of musicianship in the charts anymore.  Heres an example. I'm not comparing the two cause thats pointless, there are big differences style wise and i dont beleive it is right for one musician to pass judgement on another, but never the less check them out and see if you can't see what my point is.

Can't say that I agree about musicians not having fun and pushing the boundaries as much as before, they're just a little harder to find. Some recommendations:

Them Crooked Vultures
Built to Spill
MGMT
Ratatat

And a whole bunch of others, that's just what I'm spinning a lot at the moment  :icon_thumright:

I'm gonna tell you what I've told a lot of people.

If you can't find new music you like.

YOU AREN'T LOOKING HARD ENOUGH.

case in point. if you liked 80's Pop. there is a good chance this will appeal to you.

if Psychedelic or metal appealed to you. Ayreon covers dozens of genre's... and often has nearly ten vocalists on a single album.

i kind of see your point, but i'm confused because i can't tell if you mean you like paramore, or really dislike them. i'm really on the fence about them. a few of their songs are awesome, and others seem really uninspired. they're definitely my kind of music. but only some of their stuff in particular. they're catchy and you could totally turn some of their stuff up on a road trip. i think if i were going to be in a current touring band they would be one of the few that might be on my wish list. but at the same time i can't listen to one of their albums all the way through because i'll hit one of those songs that just bores me.

i'm kind of in the same boat. i was born in '88 and never really got excited about music when i was little. my dad listened to oldies all the time, so i loved me some beatles and beach boys. i've really grown out of that and moved into more modern stuff, but i still listen to old steve vai, VH, steve stevens, slippery when wet bon jovi, and a few other things (danger zone by loggins has to be one of my favorite songs of all time). but at the same time there was a whole lot of crap in the 80's too. every time i see Totally 80's (blocks of music videos on VH1 Classic) i always get excited, but can't watch for more than a song or two because most of it is awful :dontknow:

yeah man, i might have used the wrong words. my problem is i cant seem to get into alot of new stuff. I LOVE the darkness for instance, and i love the answer, and wolfmother and airbourne. all very rock obviously. I understand there will be music i like and music i dont, just the way of it. But no matter what period of time i step into, 40's - mid 90's i like more music then i didnt like. but the reverse is true for anything past that mark. something changed. and i don't know what it was. i love the foo's in the 90s and some of their new stuff, but its hard for me to like anything new.

actually now i think about it i have a tendancy to hate anything thats hyped... maybe thats why i dont like it. damn this immaturity!

i forgot to mention Third Eye Blind. probably THE single most 90's band out there. and they're ****ing amazing.

I really do like Paramore. I have 2 of their CDs, "All We Know is Falling" and "Riot". For such a young group, they play with some very different styles in their music. They are not just some punk/emo band. And Haley Williams has a great voice with some nice character to it. I do agree that they toss in a song or two in there that kills the vibe of the CD.

Here's a couple of my faveroties:

all their songs sound so happy and pop-py on the surface, but they're all secretly about sex, murder, flunking out of school, and on and on :evil4: thats why i love them! great song writers

EDIT: my favorite paramore song

There alright tunes, but again its all a matter of opinion, for me all that matters in a song is that you are inspired to pick up an instrument or be creative in some way. I truely beleive nothing should be put down, but i really can't help but feel bands care too much about getting a hit single. and will write bollocks just to get on tv and on the radio. again people will agree with me and people will disagree. But i dont want to put anyone or their music down at the end of the day im just some arse with an opinion.

Progressive, innovative, catchy and oh so very inspiring. Not everyones cup of tea, but I love 'em  :party07:
Or well, him. Tosin Abasi came up with everything and recorded all guitar and bass tracks and Misha Mansoor programmed the synthesizer effects and drums.
He's now touring with Javier Reyes on guitar, Navine Koperweis on drums and Chebon Littlefield on computer-effects.
