7/8th Strat with 24" Mustang neck

Thank you.
Yes, I'm so happy with it. And even though it's simple, it's capable of quite a few sounds, thanks to the five way switch.

Thank you both, much appreciated.

@Great Ape, praise from you is the highest praise. I'm honoured.  :occasion14:

Looks and sounds great!

I thought the 7/8 body only accommodated the Warhead 24.75" neck? How did you get the intonation set? Relocate the bridge?

No, no relocation necessary. I learned here on this forum that the Mustang 24" neck was a drop-in replacement on the 7/8 Strat and Tele bodies with no modification necessary. It's actually found on one of Warmoth webpages, but it's easy to overlook. Some way down here in the box saying "Compatibility information" you'll find it.

I highly recommend it if you, like me, have smaller hands. It makes you feel like you've got massive Yngwie hands and are able to shred without breaking a sweat.  :icon_biggrin:

I really want to try a 24" scale as well. I went to get some strings at the local GC here this past weekend and saw a mustang and sat down to try it out, literally unplayable. Strings that were about to snap with rust and the top two strings were so low they didn't sound when open...

I don't know how anyone could actually buy a guitar from those places, but that is another story entirely...

I know exactly what you mean. I've been there too. Went to a local music store here in Stockholm and tried a Mustang. I saw and felt that it needed some adjustment to make it somewhat playable and asked for a small allen wrench to adjust the saddle height on some strings. When I lowered them it turned out that they instead sat flush to the edge of the bridge (which I hadn't any means to adjust there and then). So once again a Mustang that is unplayable and adds to it's reputation of a crappy guitar. Which is a shame, because I really think it would be really cool if properly setup.

I'm actually thinking of making one of my future Warmoth a really classy Mustang. I think that would be really cool. Maybe with a flamed maple top!  :laughing7:

Thanx for the Compatibility Information. It says "Most... Mustang necks"... Is there something to look out for so you don't wind up buying a 24" neck that won't intonate/fit?

My first electric guitar was loaned to me by my brother in law who had bought a New Zealand built Strat copy in 1960s during the Surf music craze, that had  Jaguar slide switches, tremolo tailpiece and a shorter scale which I think was 24".

I didn't realise the difference until many years later when I bought a Fender Strat and it was a stretch.

I have built 3 Warmoths and two are 24.75" conversions.  I have resisted getting Jags & Mustangs because in stock form they usually are not what I want in sound or quality (though the Johnny Marr jag has a lot of merit to it). Those trem systems are abysmal IMHO.

But if I get a Strat in 7/8 scale would I be able to get 3 pickups in the universal pool route? I'm looking at one S/C (neck) and 2 HB (mid & bridge).. :dontknow:

If you buy a Warmoth body and a Warmoth neck I can't imagine that you would have any problems. But I can imagine that there are some Fender necks that's supposed to fit but will actually not. Fender being what Fender is ...  :laughing7:

I'm sure you would, but when going to Warmoths pickguard builder I see now that they don't offer that option. Not quite anyway, but almost:

Maybe they could make what you need if you called and asked them or perhaps you could take the above option and make what you need yourself.

The second version comes to life!
I got my P90 pickups, DiMarzio DLX's, yesterday and started putting them in my 7/8 Strat. You might remember that I got the body with the universal routing and three different pickguards so that I could put in different types of pickups to see which ones I liked the best.

It turned out that I stumbled upon a inconsistency that made me have to resort to some unorthodox solutions. I wrote about it here yesterday. In short, you can't put DiMarzio P90's in a strat body with universal routing.

Here's what I did.

I got some plastic bits I had lying around and drilled some holes in them:

I cut the ends and then screwed each to the bottom of the universal route underneath where each pickup will end up:

And voìla, I had something to hang my pickups from:

And the sound? AWESOME! This is more up my alley. I'll post some sound clip next weekend. Until then, here's an image of the finished guitar:

Thanks guys! Much appreciated.  :yourock:

I will post some sound clips on friday or saturday when I'm back again.  :headbang4:

I @$#^ing love this guitar. So glad I have finally seen someone put the universal rout to use. I have always thought that if I ever get a Warmoth strat I would definitely get it. Not sure why there are even other options.

I agree. Other than the DiMarzio P90 incident I wrote about, the universal route is very convenient when there's a pickguard to cover it. Not only are you able to try out different pickup combination, but you won't find yourself in that pickup/pickguard-doesn't-line-up-exactly-as-they-should-dilemma.

Great solution. That should sound awesome. Looking forward to the sound clips.

Thanks rgand. :occasion14:

About the sound clips though ... I'm home now, but unfortunately sick as a dog. I don't have the strength to do any recording today, but I hope I'll be able to do it tomorrow.
Watch this space ...

Finally got round to record some sounds from my lovely Warmoth 7/8 Strat, now equipped with DiMarzio DLX plus's.

I love the sound they're capable of. So much so that I will also post this in the pickup category.
