I don’t know why I have such a hard time with this. I thought using it in the gun would be better than the experience I had with the Spraymax rattle cans, but had the same issue. I guess it’s solvent pop, but I did everything correctly from what I have seen. I tried sanding it off without messing up the dye, but……

I worked on that burst for a week to get it right, very disappointing. Guess I’ll just use Nitro on it next time. Even with taking a dang month to finish it just always goes down so nice for me.IMG_0027.jpeg

Sorry man! Acrylic poly?

Why not just use nitro lacquer in a can?
As long as your base codes are stains and other nitro compatible products. Nitro is probably one of the easiest finishes to spray at home.

I’ve been using Nitro, and recently started using it in the gun after getting my equipment. That’s what I’m using on my Surf Green build, Oxford Primer, color and clear - all nitro. I love working with nitro and it goes down great, but just wanted to try a more ‘modern’ finish that’s more durable and doesn’t take 200 coats…..😀. And that you don’t have to wait 3 weeks before buffing/polishing.

On one hand I understand the desire to try new but after years of trying new I just keep going back to the ease of nitro.

Well Mama only thought Foosball was the Devil. 2K is the actual Devil !!! Man, you can feel, smell, and taste the evil in it even when sanding it off, even with a respirator.

I swear there was a Devil figure in the finish just taunting me.......

Oh man, it really is the devil! Every time I use it, my lungs are burning for a day. Maybe it also reacts badly to dyes? I used it for 3 of my builds but haven't tried it with dyes so far. Spraymax on the two and another amazon brand on my latest red superstrat . The spraymax finish is great, very durable. The other one (sadly on my latest red superstrat) is still soft! I press my fingernail and it leaves a mark after months of finishing it! It's going to get a refinish soon, I'll probably continue that thread I created a while back.

I bought some cans of clear coat 2k polyurethane a few years ago. The more I read about it, the more nervous I became. I evantually gave them to someone else. I understand that it's a very durable finish, but I would not want to risk messing up my lungs with the stuff.

Smart move. I usually use a respirator mask and it's fine, except sometimes I get ahead of myself and apply the first pass without it. Even that's enough to mess you up for the rest of the day.

Hey all. I know this is a few months old but I just had to ask the O.P.... Did you seal it before applying the 2k topcoat? If you didn't use a compatible sealer beforehand the topcoat may have had a reaction with the dye.

That said, I don't know about anyone else's experience here, but I just recently switched over to using target coatings Emcat+ for my finishing work. Their sealer and the topcoat are water based and formulated to work together. The topcoat is a 2k product that is extremely durable and buffs out to a high gloss shine that looks like glass. Low VOC as well so it's safer to use than traditional 2k. I've only used the gloss 90 but they also have a few satin offerings. Best part for me coming from nitro? It cures in 24 to 36 hours instead of weeks.

Anyway, it's a few coats of sealer, level sand, topcoat, level sand, topcoat, wet sand and polish. Works really well for me so far.

Just thought I would share my experience.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just looked that stuff up. Does sound promising, especially being water based. I may give it a try
And Welcome Aboard !

I sprayed 3 coats of sanding sealer over the dye, and lightly sanded before applying the 2K. Same process I used on my Purple Haze build which turned out great. I was being a little facetious with the Devil remark, I really think the conditions were just not good for spraying. Hard to get good weather in TX in the summer when it's 105 and humid, so I have to work on my patience. I did have a good experience with it this past weekend painting a e-bike for my grandson, but of course that was on metal over 2k color coat. The 70 degree day was perfect !

But I must say, the redo using Nitro really looks great.....
