Like we all do, I’m thinking about my next project. I’m looking thru Fender history. I’m very intrigued at how they meant the Jazzmaster as an alternative to Gibson models, obviously for the jazz market of the late 50s; it didn’t work of course.
How would you consult Fender if you could time travel back to then?

No, but honestly, I think their best bet would've been to release a humbucker equipped Jaguar as their Jazz flagship. The pickups and shorter scale would've gone a long way towards mellowing out the sound, cause, unless I'm mistaken, the single coily twang you get from a JM was what turned Jazz players off.
 
Agreed. It’s hard to know why they continued the unsuccessful Rhythm Circuit into the Jaguar which an even less suitable design for jazz.
