    countering neck heaviness

Tele has this problem because the strap button is at the 16th fret, instead of the 12th fret ike a Strat... And you need a lot of weight in the body to balance the neck. Here's a simple formula for balance: Weight x arm = moment (or torque, if you prefer). figure the total weight of each...

Body Weight = ? Build Weight

I built a chambered Strat using three humbuckers...the body before paint weighed 2.1 pounds, and the entire guitar weighs 6.8. So, assuming you use three humbuckers and sperzel tuners on a rear rout body, the neck and hardware might be around 4 to 5 pounds. For an eight pound target, figure a...

What would you do different if you ran Gibson?

A long time ago, Gibson stopped building instruments for musicians, instead building consumer items to please stockholders under the facade of "guitar". If I owned the name, I would simply build a competive instrument for today's musician, putting the guitarist FIRST, and shareholders in second...

The biggest contributor to all my mistakes and goofups

I have one room dedicated, it has a 6x3 table for working on stuff, and parts drawers, soldering station, plenty of room on the walls to hang guitars and plenty of room to work on a guitars and amps. Now, if I could actually SEE the floor, or even the bench, though all the little projects...

Effect of string trees - this time with data!

Funky Phil has it right. The mechanics involved have far less to do with the tree itself, or the break angle, than the length of vibrating "dead" string. It's part of the reason that a Steinberger headless has such great sustain, and part of the reason that a locking nut arrangement seems to...

Why does Warmoth only offer a bolt on neck and..

Having owned and played bolt-on, neck through, and set-neck types over the years, in my little opinion the vast majprity of the very best playing, sounding, and professional grade instruments are bolt-on. I've only become strongly biased after 30 years of pickin'. Ya want wood-to-wood contact...

    Nitro wear and tear...

My girlfriend has a Gibson Nighthawk, built early to mid 90's. It's been on the road for a few years, from ABQ to Nome. The finish is checked (of course) and the neck feels "sticky". I can polish the back of the neck, and it feels good for a song, then the lacquer feels draggy again. My poly...

    Thread about delevery problem deleted!!

Two things about this thread strike me as "odd". 1. That a manufacturer is responsible for an entirely different company's actions or damages...sure, we wanna blame somebody, but Warmoth is really not responsible if the shipper damages a package. Warmoth offering a full refund for someone...

Make a grown man cry. How to build a sad sounding blues guitar...

"...and SRV is the worst thing to ever happen to the blues...  not that its the blues anymore... and what SRV was doing was not the blues...  It was Hendrix theft." I've been saying that for years, and of course most think it's blasphemy of something. It's probably just age. Nothing wrong with...

    Recessed wilkinson tremolos..

I've got the recessed Wilky on one of my Strats. The hole is about the same size as the standard Fender trem. The recess is only about 1/8" on the top, and it's the same size as the trem base plate. Can't tell it's a recess from a few feet away, and there's not any difference that I can hear.

    Who's responcible?

"Gimmie a couple more beers and a shot of Patron and it might happen tonight." :laughing7: That sure is a beautiful walnut Soloist. With the right neck it oughta be amazing. :occasion14:

Are lightweight bodies really all that?

"I also soon discovered that I have to keep the neck from flopping downward AND try to play it at the same time. This proves to be very cumbersome." Some guitar bodies are just more prone to be neck heavy. I've seen more than one LP and Tele types that tend to be a little unbalanced, and they...

HOLLOW BODY STRAT VRS. SOLID BODY

At home, I have two solid body Strats, a Warmoth and a Fender. I have a hollow (well, chambered) Warmoth Strat as well, so to compare the general weight and tone: I'll never buy a solid body Strat again. I don't see the point, since the hollow sounds better to me and weighs half as much. I've...

    Thoughts on Line 6 pods?

Not a fan of Line 6. I've got three of them in the house (girlfriends gear). A Flextone combo, an old pod, and the rack XT Pro. None of them work properly for various technical reasons, and I wont be boring everyone with the whole latency issues that make me feel a little "disconnected" from the...

Questions to ask a guitar or bass teacher

    1. How long should a lesson be? Half hour?  Whole Hour? Depends on the individual. If you're ready and the teacher is prepared, half an hour is standard. If you're more relaxed and like to BS a bit, plan an hour. 2. How many lessons a week? One a week, max. If you're doing your homework and...
