Let set fully - sand back, or scrape back (easier), then sand level.
 
It's been a while since I had time to mess with it, but I have found 1) scraping is tons faster and better than sanding. 2) if you're trying to scrape finish only and not touch wood, you can ignore the directions about burnishing the scraper - you WANT the square edges rather than the burnished micro-lip, and for this application you WANT it to draw dust/shavings rather than the more aggressive bite used for more normal wood removal scraping (which 99% of the scraping directions on internet talk about)

The forest green idea got scrapped.

It ended up being more opaque, but this is after a coat of vinyl sealer and the first application of white dye.

I have skipped the vinyl sealer coat before without problems, but figured better safe than sorry.
