Working with Minwax

I've wiped on a coat of Minwax Golden Pecan stain only to find that there are some spots that need fixing.  There's a couple of tiny dings that need to be filled and some sanding scratches I hadn't noticed.  The directions on the can say you can't sand after applying the stain, but I can't stand these things...  I'm going to have to sand.  So am I going to have to sand it all off or can I spot fix these things without creating some dark patches where I've got stain overlapping?
