Working with binding

Hey,
How much should I worry about damaging binding on a body when applying finish? I would be using wipe on poly. I'm mostly worried about the rough sand stage.
Thanks!
Heft.

Single-ply or multi-ply binding? And what grit paper are you going to use?  If you can, some pictures of the biding and body would help.

The binding will be whatever comes from Warmoth, either abalone or cream. I have not yet ordered the body.
for sandpaper; I usually start with 300 grit and then work my way up to 1200. I'm out of 2000 right now but if I can find some (this pandemic) I would finish with that.

If it's coming from Warmoth, I believe that should mean single ply plastic binding. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Once your using 600 grit or above you shouldn't have to worry. If you start at 300, you should be ok, just try not to grind to heavily on the side face of the plastic. 300 won't take a lot of material away but it can leave scratches that will haunt you later. If your only leveling out the finish though you shouldn't have to worry too much.

Are you asking about wet sanding after finish or prior to finishing?

Both I guess. My first warmoth body looked pretty smooth but I still sanded before the first coat. I assume on this body I will sand before the first coat and then sand after each coat.

abalone binding would be baller af but i don't think Big W does that. or is that on their secret In-and-Out burger menu?
