Wooden pick up rings

I am looking for some wooden pick up rings in quilted maple.
I need the slanted kind for a angled neck pocket and a flat top body.
Anyone got a resource for those? :help:

Also this is my plan.
I have not seen it done so I am gonna just go for it and see how it comes out.
The top of the guitar is quilted maple and I plan on dyeing it myself.
I thought it would look killer to dye the pick up rings the same way as the body and then clear coat them.

Has anyone ever tried this or seen it done?

My theory is if it looks like crap I will just get a set of ebony ones to match the finger board and call it a day.
Either way it will be cooler than plastic. :party07:

I have got some in the past from:

http://pickuprings.com/

He does great work, but I had to fight with him for months after I paid for them to actually receive them.  I wrote him many, many emails and he made many, many promises.  He never kept his word...
He also builds guitars and the rings are just his sideline.  So, he takes your money and then makes the rings whenever he may get around to it.

My new man for wood rings is this cat:

http://reedjamescustom.com/id11.html

He is a really nice guy.  I have a set of rings on order with him right now.
He told me it would be about a 2 week lead time for him to make the rings.
It has been right about 2 weeks.  I have not received them yet, but when I do I will let you know how they are.

Good luck &  :rock-on:

I thought Stew Mac had some wooded ones as well.

They do, they are $40 for a set of one ring and one cover I think.

You aren't going to see the quilt on a maple ring only.  Maybe on a pickup cover, but on a ring, I doubt it.  I have maple rings on my WGD, I found them on Ebay, I can't make them for what I payed for these.  I think I paid $8 each.

Also I think the idea of a monochromatic color scheme in natural finishes is an awesome idea.  Just finish everything together.  Most of the wood trim rings and wood pu covers I am pretty sure are already finished.  You would have to sand the finish off of the rings to get your dye to take.  But I think it will work out for you.

If all else fails I can make you a set of pickup rings in whatever kind of wood you want!!!

I can't speak for the pu covers because I have not used them, but all of the rings on the sites that I mentioned are unfinished,
They do have maple, and they are unfinished, but most of them are made from exotic woods that one would not want to cover up with a finish...

Good point, You probably won't see any quilt pattern on a PU ring any way, I think the maple ones from stew mac will work after I sand off the finish.
I have a quilted maple top, and peg head veneer so my master plan was to dye the top, peg head and PU rings all at the same time then just shoot clear.

This looks like the ticket $10 more than stew mac and I dont have to sand them.
Also the reed james set has a taller bridge ring set up for the TOM/angled neck pocket style bridge set up.
I think it looks lame to have the bridge pick up sticking out of the ring really far due to having a short ring which would be the case with the stew mac rings becuase they are both short rings

So you are going to need a wood control cavity cover, right?  PM me, I don't have any quilted maple, but I have plain maple, and you can finish it with the rest of the guitar.  I will find some quilt maple for you if you can't find any.  Sorry for the blatent self promotion, but a guy has to make a living somehow.....

I ordered a pair of the rings from the reed james custom site.
Did you ever get yours?
I was just wondering how long he took.

Also I ordered some wood knobs off this eBay store and they came in less that a week and the workmanship is top notch.

If you're looking for a solid source for wood knobs that are cheap here it is

Here are the rings for Black Dogs strat that were sent to me for finishing.  This picture is of them wet with thinner to bring out the grain. As far as workmanship I will have to do a lot of final sanding to get them ready for finish.  I guess Warmoth spoils me since their stuff comes real clean.

It took right at 3 weeks to get them out the door to Tonar.
He told me it would be 2 weeks when I ordered them, so I was expecting a bit of a delay.
Just an FYI, I asked Jim to pick from stock that did not have a lot of flame.
Since the flame on the rings is the opposite direction as the flame on the body, I did not want to get things too busy.
I am disappointed that Tonar has to finish sand them; I guess that I would just have expected them to be ready to finish.

Hey, ya win some, ya learn some...  :headbang1:

i've ordered from the pickuprings.com guy as well. the rings arrived and looked awesome! i was pretty happy with them. BUT he took forever getting them to me. what he basically told me in an email was that he's also putting his own guitars together to sell and had to plan for the NAMM show. i guess it's my fault for ordering since i knew he'd be busy. they were great, but not worth that wait in my opinion. i'll be looking into the reedjamescustom.com next time! thanks, black dog.

Yea, I think we were both waiting at the same time because that is the same story that he had for me.  I remember you posting that you had ordered some rings from him right after I had ordered mine.  Bummer, because he really does nice work.  Have you checked out his guitars?  They are pretty sweet as well.
Good luck &  :rock-on:

i have! he had one sort of peavey-wolfgang type thing with a purple flame top on it (with SD P-rails) that might be one of the coolest looking guitars i've ever seen

I got my pick up rings from reed james today.

Not as cool as I hoped for $60.
Like tonar said, they need some sanding. they are rough for sure.
Also one of them has a chip out near the corner. Not a major deal but for the price you would expect more.
But worst of all they need to be sanded just to get the pick up to fit. they are two snug.

Also I ordered the curly maple ones, and there is no figure at all. Even after I got them wet to see if it would pop a bit.
I am convinced its just regular maple.

On the bright side the flame maple wood tone knobs i ordered from this guy look bad ass.

Lots of figure and really pro workmanship. Also they are pretty cheap.
