Hi there,

I'd like to find information and pictures on wood mounting a Gibson large sized humbucker.
I'm just not clear on how it's done and also if pickup rings are still used.

Any info or pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

I second this request but add that I'd really just want this info for humbuckers in general...

Is there a way to wood mount and still have them adjustable? and not flip back and forth?

Yep like this:

Definitely go with no humbucker ring..Adding the wood to the pocket is pretty easy, you can go to home depot or any hardware store and get some maple or oak trim. Cut to fit the end routes and glue them in. I've done it many times, most of my guitars I build I direct mount to the body...... :icon_thumright:

Not wanting to hijack here. Dan, do you have any advice on the best way to direct mount pickups to wood?

I will also be doing this soon for my carved top tele, and would like to know the best way. I was thinking of using the original himbucker springs with wood screws. Also thinking of place some mousepad foam underneath them so they aren't so wobbly. Is there a better way to do this?    :icon_thumright:
Yip, that is basically what I do, after filling the end routes with wood. I get some long wood screws and some dense foam, and use the long humbucker springs for height adjustment..And it's best if you pre drill the mounting holes and run the screws into the holes first to cut the threads in the holes, it makes mounting them much easier... :icon_thumright:

Cool, thanks for the info. The body I have ordered is setup for Woodmount humbuckers, so i shouldn't have to worry about filling the end routes.
Cool deal, that's always a plus... :icon_thumright:

Yes. All of that is pretty obvious.
I was hoping to find a method that allows height adjustment and has a clean look.

the above method does allow for height adjustments. Clean look is all about perception... define please?    :icon_scratch:

I think it'll be obvious when I see it. Hopefully others have done wood mound and have more detailed pictures.

Firm foam to stabilize, so obvious yet so brilliant.

seems like this is another time threaded inserts may be a good idea?

Threaded inserts, yea, they might, but in my experience with both of my strats once I get the pickup adjusted properly I never change it, so I'd not have a problem going directly into the wood.

I'm just not seeing a way to do that without drilling out the threaded holes in the wings to accept the would mounting screws.
I don't think anyone makes machine screws with that thread count that also have a point to go into wood.
I'd also like to be able to use the rings to cover up the cavity around the pickup.

Now, I could tolerate drilling out the holes in the rings to allow a thin cross head screw driver to get down to the mounting screw.

What doesn't make sense to me in the thread nexrex pointed us to are things like:
"adding the wood to the pockets"
"filling the end routes"

Without a decent picture it's not possible to determine how it was done in that post.

OK, this is a pickup route designed for mounting a humbucker using pickup rings:

Wood mounting doesn't have the drilled out section (end routes) for where your screws would normally push through:

The foam goes under the hollow space between your bucker and the wood, pushing them up. Stopping them from being so wobbly.
As suggested it is also smart to also use the normal height adjustment springs, so you can raise and lower them properly.

I like the look of wood mounted pickups, not sure why you would then want to place pickup rings over the top?  :icon_scratch:
Doesn't that defeat the purpose of wood mounting? Why not then just mount them to face of the body?

Dumb Question Time!

I'm assuming the two deeper routes are always the same size, right? Would it be possible for one enterprising fellow to make the correct size "plugs" and then have them available for sale? I don't mind taking on the gluing part, but the whole wood-cutting thing is heebie jeebie land for me. So I'd certainly be willing to pay for a fairly quick fix.

Now please tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about.  :tard:

Do you have to use pickup rings for a the top photo?

You don't have to use rings if it's wood mounted but in my opinion it looks unfinished without the rings.

sorry I didn't make myself clear, is it possible for the pickup route with the drilled out sections on either side to have no pickup rings?

Only with some extreme fudging. The reason they're drilled deeper there is to allow the mounting screw that goes through the ring room enough to move.
